Slightly further afield is the friendly small town of Wooler (known locally as Glendale; the inspiration for ‘Postman Pat’s, Greendale’) only 5 miles inland. This is a popular destination for those who enjoy cycling, golf, horse riding and walking with the challenging St Cuthbert’s Way close by.
Bamburgh is renowned for its majestic fortress and beautiful expanse of golden, sandy beach and is only 11 miles east. The elegant Georgian town of Berwick-upon-Tweed, which straddles the salmon rich River Tweed, and the cobbled, market town of Alnwick, protected by its dramatic castle, both offer a wide array of amenities around half an hour’s drive away. Alnwick Garden is a popular visitor attraction to see the Grand Cascade Waterfall and dine in the restaurant within the largest tree house in Europe! Northumberland is such a diverse and friendly county with the beautiful Heritage Coast only 15 miles to Bamburgh, with a cliff top castle from where you can follow the trail and take in the history, a lovely day trip. Holy Island Causeway is only 14 miles where the Lindisfarne Gospels were kept (check the tides). The location really is ideal for exploring in all directions of Northumberland and Scotland’s Border counties.
Wooler itself has that country feeling while still having a market town buzz, combining home comforts with countryside. You can be hiking the Cheviot Hills in the morning and having a local beer in one of the nearby pubs on an evening. St Cuthbert’s Way walk passes via Wooler, a 62-mile route following the ancient pilgrimage route, followed by St Cuthbert and many other monks between Melrose Abbey in the Scottish Borders and the Holy Island of Lindisfarne in north Northumberland. The Northumberland National Park stretches south through Kielder and Wark Forests as far as Hadrian’s Wall, and north to the Scottish border. Long stretches of sand can be found lining the coast south of Berwick-upon-Tweed, 16 miles. At Beal, 13 miles, the road to Holy Island runs gently down to the shore, where it becomes a causeway covered and impassable at high tide.
