Noble names have woven the threads of the hall’s long history including Henry de Ferrers, the Cokaynes and the Harthills. Henry VIII is also believed to have stayed at the hall.

It was here in 1259 that Sir Richard de Hartle was issued a Papal Bull by Pope Alexander II, allowing him to appoint his own chaplain. The chapel ceased its functions as a place of worship in 1546 and now takes the form of The Chapel and Hartle Cottage. The eight cottages are furnished with antiques and surround a medieval cobbled courtyard. They all retain a wealth of original features including thick stone walls, large oak beams, mullion windows and flagstone floors. National Trust properties and gardens nearby include Riley Graves, Longshaw, Mam Tor, South Peak, Dovedale, Hardwick Hall and Kedleston Hall. Close by are both Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall. It is an ideal position from which to enjoy many of the wonderful attractions Derbyshire has to offer including Bakewell, which can be reached in around 5 minutes, with its independent shops, tea shops, weekly farmers’ market, and of course the Bakewell pudding shop! Nearby is the exceptional Chatsworth House and Gardens, along with medieval manor house Haddon Hall.

Shardlow is an unexpected delight for any unsuspecting visitor, whether emerging from the Derby conurbation in the north and finding quiet, spacious, sweeping greenery, or from the south where a signpost tells you you’re now in Derbyshire, although without the hills and dales you might have been expecting. As you spy the boats, locks, and warehouses, you might even wonder if you’ve been transported to a corner of the Netherlands, an impression that would have been even more likely if Shardlow had hung on to its windmill and more importantly in its hayday it was referred to as ‘Rural Rotterdam’ and ‘Little Liverpool’. Today Shardlow is Britain’s most complete surviving example of a canal village, much of it snuggled safely in a conservation area.

It has retained many original features and has an excellent location, close to the village pubs and shops. The cottage has been equipped with quality appliances and is situated close to the popular market town of Bakewell. It is in a great location for visiting the Derbyshire countryside.

Ash Cottage is located centrally to Buxton town centre, but far enough away that you can retreat to the quietness of the house. On the ground floor is a cosy and comfortable sitting room with a Smart TV and an electric fire, the perfect cosy space. The kitchen is fully equipped should you wish to cook anything during your stay and sit around the dining table to enjoy! The table can be folded away or pulled further out to suit your requirements. On the first floor there are two bedrooms, the first having a double bed and the second providing two singles, and on this floor, you’ll also find a shower room with a large shower cubicle. The property is modern and finished to a nice standard giving you a happy place to return to at the end of your fun-filled day. Outside there is a small rear courtyard where you can securely store bikes or let out your furry friends.
From the doorstep of Ash Cottage, you can walk to the many restaurants, bars and pubs that the town has to offer, as well as lovely cafés and independent shops. Buxton is also home to the opera house and Pavilion Gardens which often have things going on. There are many walks from the town, such as the High Peak trail and the Tissington trail, as well as Castleton and the caverns.
Head to the neighbouring towns of Bakewell, Ashbourne and Matlock, all having plenty of things to do, or delve into the history at Chatsworth House and Gardens. If you prefer something a little more thrill seeking then Alton Towers theme park is around a 45-minute drive, or Carsington Water has a large menu of water sports available, as well as a nice 8-mile walk or cycle around the reservoir spotting the wildlife. Buxton also has a train station which connects you directly to the city of Manchester where you can be within 1 hour with late trains back available.
