Nestled within the heart of North Devon’s rural ’Tarka the Otter’ country in beautiful countryside, yet just 10 miles from the glorious North Devon coast, Stowford Lodge Holiday Cottages are the perfect choice for a relaxing holiday at any time of year. The four pretty barn conversions, Warren Cottage (ref UKC2098), Halcyon Cottage (ref UKC2099), Tarquol Cottage (ref UKC2100) and Old Nog Cottage (ref UKC2101) are terraced and sit within a courtyard, whilst Tarka’s Holt Log Cabin (ref UKC2102) is detached, and all five enjoy use of the owner’s 6 acres of private parkland comprising an orchard, with a spacious children’s play area with swings and a climbing frame and animals to see including two Dartmoor ponies, sheep and hens. There’s also a level 1-acre field with a football goal and rugby posts, which is also ideal for kite flying and cricket. The ideal choice for a romantic break for two or a family holiday, the cottages are close to a wooded walk amongst numerous young trees running alongside the pony and sheep field, and an indoor heated swimming pool.
The holiday cottages are 3 miles from Great Torrington, where shops, pubs, restaurants, a public indoor swimming pool, tennis courts and sports hall can be found. The stunning beaches of the North Devon coast are less than 10 miles away - with sailing, fishing and a sandy beach at Instow, surfing at Westward Ho!, Saunton Sands, Croyde Bay, Putsborough and Woolacombe, as well as lofty cliffs and headlands along the rocky fringes of Hartland. Lots of activities for friends and families nearby including golf, horse riding, sailing, fishing, shooting, cycle hire and walking. The Tarka Trail long distance footpath and cycle way passes within ¼ mile and the RHS gardens at Rosemoor are less than 2 miles away. The beautiful moorland areas of Exmoor and Dartmoor are also within easy reach. This picturesque location provides the perfect base for a leisurely and peaceful holiday, with many coastal, woodland and moorland walks in the surrounding area and many local places of interest to visit. Greenbank Cottage is a very well presented end of terrace house just 20 minutes or so drive from the coast and beach at Westward Ho! Accommodation is on two levels with three bedrooms upstairs including a twin, a king size and a standard double. There is also a family bathroom with bath and shower over. On the ground floor you will find a comfortable lounge with smart TV and a modern kitchen/diner with electric oven & hob, a fridge/freezer and microwave. There’s also a handy downstairs separate WC.
Outside there are front and rear gardens where you can sit out and there is parking for one car located in front of the property’s garage just opposite. Torrington or Great Torrington is a town built on the site of an ancient settlement at the top of an inland cliff with the River Torridge below. The town benefits from some great countryside and rolling hills views and has lots of independent shops and a regular pannier market. The location is 12 miles from the regional capital town of Barnstaple with its many cafés and restaurants, Queens Theatre, multi-screen cinema, leisure centre with swimming pool, a purpose-built tennis centre with indoor and outdoor courts and an indoor trampoline centre. And the popular port town of Bideford which sits on the Torridge estuary is just 7 miles away. North Devon is famed for its fantastic natural attractions such as Exmoor National Park with its magical night skies in Europe’s first ’Dark Sky Reserve’, the many rugged coastal towns and quaint villages such as Lynton & Lynmouth, Ilfracombe and the world-famous Clovelly Village, all with awe-inspiring scenery.
If stunning beaches are your thing then the region will leave you spoilt for choice with Saunton, Woolacombe, Croyde and Westward Ho! Beaches - all within easy reach by car. The fantastic South West Coastal Path runs through the region’s rugged coastline and is perfect for walkers and view seekers offering 90 miles of stunning walks. And the popular Tarka Trail can be accessed locally and provides the unique opportunity to follow a disused railway line on foot or by bicycle allowing you to enjoy some of Devon’s finest countryside and river scenery which will take you through places like Fremington Quay & Yarde with their excellent cafés, Instow with its estuary beach and view towards the lovely fishing village of Appledore through to Bideford, Barnstaple and beyond. For a day with a difference why not take a trip across to Lundy Island, home to England’s first statutory Marine Nature Reserve due to its unique flora and fauna? Measuring just 3 miles by ¾ mile, this entire island has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest and trips regularly depart from either Bideford or Ilfracombe.

Located right in the heart of Ilfracombe, Blue Beach House is very conveniently located with all the local shops, restaurants and other local amenities within easy walking distance of the house. Seek out Damian Hirst’s ’Verity’ sculpture - a great topic of conversation. The Victorian Tunnels Beaches are worth a visit and are also a sought after wedding venue. A walk up to St Nicholas Chapel will give you a great view over the harbour and town. Enjoy a spot of crabbing from the pier and there a numerous sightseeing and fishing trips leaving from the harbour.
During your stay, there is plenty to see and do in the local area and slightly further afield. Good days out include Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park, Watermouth Castle and the Lynton to Lynmouth cliff railway. At Croyde and Woolacombe you will find some of the best and cleanest surf beaches in the country as well as many smaller coves and bays. Exmoor is a short distance away and on a clear day the views can be spectacular. There are National Trust properties at Arlington and Knightshayes and the RHS gardens at Rosemoor, Great Torrington. Shewte Farm is an elegant, Grade II listed, galleried stone barn and has a floor-to-ceiling picture window offering spectacular views over Dartmoor. Sleeping six comfortably in three spacious bedrooms, it has an open plan living space with French limestone floor, underfloor heating and a wood burner. It has been furnished throughout with characterful antiques and the highest quality linen. Guests also have use of the adjoining games barn and the tree house.
The location is idyllic and ever so peaceful, set in the middle of 80 acres of fields, woods and streams set between the National Park and National Trust land. The area is exceptionally rich in wildlife including buzzards, deer, otters (part of National England Otter Survey) and sky larks, as well as England’s largest collection of bog myrtle. The location is perfect for walking or cycling on Dartmoor, visiting numerous beaches or National Trust properties. The Cider Barn is a luxurious and spacious three-bedroom holiday home with a hot tub, two bathrooms and a large private garden set in the heart of Devon. Originally a 17th-century farmstead, the accommodation has been refurbished to a high standard for up to six guests to enjoy, and the property feels stylish and beautiful with its unique interiors. The barn is attached to the back of the owner’s farmhouse but guests will have private access with their own front door and driveway space, enough for up to four cars.
As you enter, you will be welcomed into the hallway area which has bench seating, a washer/dryer, and is perfect for hanging coats up and kicking off those wellies after a bracing walk in the countryside. The spacious living room is comfortably furnished with a large corner sofa, Smart TV with Freeview and a gas wood burner. One of the kingsize bedrooms is located on the ground floor and there is a handy shower room across the hallway.
Head upstairs to discover the other two kingsize bedrooms, one of which has zip and link beds and can be set up with twin beds if requested. The family bathroom is fitted with a shower over the bath, offering the choice of a relaxing soak or a refreshing shower. The elegant kitchen/diner is also located on the first floor, making the most of the beautiful views across the countryside. It is well equipped with all the key appliances and offers plenty of space to enjoy a meal together sat at the large dining table.
The secluded garden is a fantastic space to relax and unwind in with its lawn, seating area, charcoal barbeque and private wood-fired hot tub backing onto the surrounding fields. A pizza oven can be rented for a small fee and trout fishing is also available on request. There are two footpaths meandering through the owner’s land which can be accessed 100m from the front door of The Cider Barn, leading off into the fields or to the local pubs which serve the most delicious food.
The historic cathedral city of Exeter is 12 miles away with easy parking and a direct rail link from Crediton. The scenic national parks of Exmoor and Dartmoor are within a 40-minute drive away. Dartmoor is a vast moorland defined by forests, rivers, wetlands, and tors (rock formations). The South Devon ‘Jurassic’ coast is a 50-minute drive away while the rugged North Devon coast and surfing beaches are a 60-minute drive away. The Cider Barn is ideal for families and groups of friends looking for a peaceful, relaxing holiday.

Tawny Cottage at Woodbury Farm Cottages boasts both character and contemporary aspects. Based in a rural setting on the owner’s farm, the surroundings give guests the feeling of peace and space while still being just a stone’s throw from the main town of Dartmouth itself. At the front of the property is a patio with seating, making this a great place to enjoy looking out across the rolling nearby fields with a morning coffee or a late-night glass of wine.
Upon entering the property on the ground floor are the three bedrooms. One bedroom contains twin single beds, another with a kingsize bed with its own en-suite shower room, and the final bedroom again contains a kingsize bed with access to the main bathroom from the bedroom and the hallway. Upstairs then leads to the large open plan living/dining/kitchen area, with high vaulted ceilings and lots of natural light, this space feels spacious, bright and airy. Here the kitchen is well-equipped, just next to the dining area with table and chair seating and a cosy wood burner in the living space with Smart TV and sofa seating.
The main town of Dartmouth is just a 10-minute drive away, as are the local supermarkets and petrol stations, just a 5-minute drive in the same direction. The popular Dartmouth golf club is only an 8-minute drive in the opposite direction, as is the family fun adventure park, Woodlands. Guests wanting to venture further afield can take the ferry from Dartmouth acrpss to Kingswear and onto the famous fishing town of Brixham, or alternatively drive into the market town of Totnes and explore the rest of the South Hams
Beautiful local beaches include Blackpool Sands and Slapton Sands which stretches for three miles along the coast, part of the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Away from the coast take a trip to the wild beauty of Dartmoor, 40 minutes’ drive away. Regardless of the nature of your visit, Tawny Cottage is a fantastic place to start.

The totally private landscaped gardens are yours to enjoy, as are an extra two acres of pasture which are perfect for dog walking. You can spend your afternoons chilling on the sunny, south facing deck watching the wildlife of this peaceful Devon valley.

Alternatively, take a 2-mile walk to the coast through secluded woodland to laze on sandy Mothecombe beach. Totnes, a handsome market town in the South Hams, is easily reached and river cruises can be taken from here down to Dartmouth during the summer months. The owner lives close by and is on hand for help and local knowledge. Whatever you decide, you’ll certainly want to round off the evening with a soak under the stars in your private hot tub with its magically lit amphitheatre. Your stay here at Pentire will rejuvenate and delight you and when you leave you will probably be planning your next visit before you even drive out of the gates! Please note that the koi carp pond can be covered with secure netting on request. Parents with small children should also be aware that the garden has an unfenced drop.
