Nearby you can discover the Vindolanda Roman Fort, The Sill Landscape Discovery Centre and the world famous Sycamore Gap on Hadrian’s Wall. Also within easy reach is Haltwhistle, which is the ‘Geographic Centre of Britain’, with sports centre and outdoor heated swimming pools, and Burn Gorge. The picture postcard village of Bamburgh, dominated by its majestic castle, is only 2 miles north, where there is a wide expanse of golden, and often empty sandy beaches. The tidal island of Lindisfarne, locally known as Holy Island, can be seen from the beach and is accessible via a causeway twice daily. A further 2 miles up the coastline brings you to Waren Mill, which is steeped in history. Once an important port, its harbour has long since disappeared, silted up beneath the sands of the estuary. Budle Bay is a bird sanctuary and at low tide a vast expanse of mud flats is home to thousands of sea and land birds, making this location a haven for bird watchers.
Harry Potter fans can head to the historic market town of Alnwick to the incredible Alnwick Castle, one of the largest inhabited castles in the UK and used as Hogwarts when filming scenes for the Harry Potter films so it’s a must-visit for any fans, with Harry Potter related events organised here throughout the year as well as guided tours. The Alnwick Garden is also an exciting visit with its spectacular interpretation of a formal garden, including the Grand Cascade waterfall, poison garden and largest tree house in Europe where guests can dine in the restaurant. The village of Quebec has a welcoming community, with a lovely tearoom opposite serving everything from a hearty breakfast to afternoon tea, and an assortment of pubs within a mile all serving good hearty meals. Nearby, the village of Lanchester has a good selection of restaurants, pubs and shops, whilst the villages of Langley Park and Esh Winning have well stocked stores, butcher and bakery.

This is a great spot for walkers and cyclists with many established public footpaths from the village leading into the scenic countryside of County Durham. Close by, is the historic City of Durham, awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status, where you can visit the cathedral and castle or enjoy beautiful riverside walks, take a boat out on the river or a leisurely riverboat cruise. The Lumiere Festival takes place every couple of years in November and brings the city to life with live art, music and light shows in the open air theatre that the city becomes.

Visit the fabulous Kynren outdoor spectacle in nearby Bishop Auckland (but do book in advance). A little further afield but still within an easy 30-minute drive, guests will be able to take a day trip out to the popular Beamish Living Museum, see the famous Angel of the North statue in Gateshead, enjoy a day’s shopping at the Metro Centre and explore the vibrant city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The heritage coast is within an hour’s drive, making Quebec a perfect location.

Alnwick only a few minutes’ drive and is home to the famous castle used in Harry Potter where you can book broomstick lessons, and also home to the magnificent Water gardens where you can book a table at the fabulous Tree House restaurant, the largest in Europe.
Explore the cobbled streets with independent shops and bijoux cafés with something for all ages. Golf lovers will delight in the two courses close by; one being a fine 9-hole course adjacent to the beach and the other being a challenging 18-hole course at Foxton, enjoying panoramic views. Amble and Warkworth are nearby; Amble has a popular Sunday morning market where you can mix with the locals then browse in the little shopping pods on the harbour, perhaps have fish and chips or visit one of the little eating places on the harbour, or enjoy a boat trip round Coquet Island bird sanctuary. Warkworth Castle sits at the top of the hill, a pretty picture postcard village with nice cafés, friendly pubs and riverside walk.
Dinmont Cottage is an excellent choice for those seeking a homely base, allowing easy access to explore the beautiful Heritage coastline designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to the east, and the wild and captivating expanses of the heather-capped Cheviot Hills to the west.
