This is a great destination all year round, a marvellous choice for those who enjoy the great outdoors or simply want a relaxing holiday with peace and fresh air, but with many delights to discover in the local area.
Tranmire Cottage is beautifully furnished throughout, with an authentic country charm. Careful attention to detail means it is both very well-equipped and comfortable. It also has the most fabulous freestanding roll top bath with a rain shower over - a grand feature, and great for relaxing in after a day out.
The cottage sleeps six in three bedrooms, with up to three dogs welcome to join you; there are many delightful walks nearby you and they will love. The owners provide route suggestions as well as walking maps and books, and a guide packed with information about the area.
Throughout the ground floor there is underfloor heating, ensuring the large reception area can be used for drying as well as storing outdoor gear if necessary. The living room also has a large range with an open fire, great for cosying up in the winter months. This room bathed in light from the large sash window with window seat, which looks out into the lawned garden and secure paddock beyond, which is shared with the neighbouring owners. There is a dedicated seating area and BBQ within the garden, so that guests can make the most of sunny afternoons during their stay. You can collect eggs from the hens which can stay in a secure paddock or free range, depending on guest requirements.
The quintessential country kitchen is ideal for creating home-cooked meals using these eggs or other fresh local ingredients from the many farm shops in the area. Savour time together around the dining table, planning the events for the days ahead over dinner.
Up on the first floor you have the most incredible master bedroom featuring that bath, as well as a king-size bed and a separate ensuite room with a toilet and washbasin. There is then also a double bedroom as well as a twin bedroom, both with wardrobes and drawers and served by a family bathroom which has a bath with shower over. All rooms have radiators or heated towel rails. Each bedroom is beautifully themed and named after different nearby dales: Rosedale – just to the North, the heart of the moors, Farndale – renowned for the blankets of daffodils that stretch out along the river through the spring, and Ryedale – which makes up the Vale of Pickering to the south.
Within Lastingham there is a historic church, several holy wells, and a village hall where community events, all open to visitors, are held. The Blacksmith’s Arms is extremely popular with locals and travellers alike for the quality and value of their food. Dogs are welcome in their large beer garden which has shelters and heaters, and a wood-fired pizza oven.
Lastingham is two miles from Hutton-le-Hole, creating a popular circular walk. That picturesque village has a deli/bakery, pub, teashops, craft workshops and the Ryedale Folk Museum. Nearby are the market towns of Helmsley, Kirkbymoorside and Pickering - all with attractive market squares, independent shops and quaint tea rooms. Malton, Yorkshire’s Food Capital, is only half an hour away, with regular markets and festivals.
The heritage steam railway from Pickering passes through Goathland and Grosmont on its way to Whitby – all great for a stop. English Heritage properties nearby include the castles at Pickering and Helmsley, the superb Rievaulx Abbey and Wheeldale Roman Road. Castle Howard, Eden Camp, the National Centre for Birds of Prey, and the National Trust’s Nunnington Hall are also popular attractions within easy reach.
About 45 minutes away you have the incredible Yorkshire Coastline to discover, with picturesque villages and towns, sandy beaches and hidden coves to explore. Saltburn-by-the-Sea, Whitby, Robin Hood’s Bay and Scarborough all make for a fabulous day out during your stay. Those travelling from further afield may also want to take the opportunity to visit York.

Tucked away on a hillside along a quiet lane, this 150-year-old holiday cottage enjoys enviable panoramic sea views over the picturesque fishing village of Staithes. Adjoining another property, it emanates a spacious and airy feel and has been furnished and equipped to a very good standard. Complemented by a wood burner and pretty cottage garden, it also has its own adjacent parking place. The quaint cobbled streets of Staithes, with tearooms, restaurants and pubs, are just a 2-minute stroll away. Beach 400 yards. Pub and restaurant 160 yards.

Osmotherley is a quaint village situated on the edge of the North York Moors National Park and surrounded by mile upon mile of cycle routes and walkways such as the famous Lyke Wake Walk which starts or ends just above the village. The village has three traditional pubs all offering good food, local produce and fine ales, and there is a well-stocked village shop next door. There are several walking and cycling routes that pass through the village and cycling has become especially popular as the ’Tour De Yorkshire’ passes nearby each year. Osmotherley is just within the National Park where you will find some stunning scenery and ancient buildings nearby such as Sheepwash, Cod Beck Reservoir and Mount Grace Priory which are all within walking distance. There is an abundance of pretty villages in the area including Helmsley which is reached by driving up the stunning Sutton Bank with its amazing views, and you are also just 40 minutes from the pretty seaside town of Saltburn by the Sea.

The market town of Northallerton is only 7 miles away, Thirsk with its links to James Herriot, and horse racing, is just 10 miles away. A little further afield but still within an hour’s drive is the beautiful and historic Georgian town of Richmond which sits beside the River Swale and offers panoramic views across the surrounding area as well as the opportunity to explore the many antique shops, cafés, restaurants and bistros. Also within an hour’s drive of Vanehouse Apartment are the cathedral cities of York and Durham where there are many historic attractions including York Minster, the Jorvik Centre and Durham Castle. Tucked away in a rural setting within the North York Moors National Park, The Wheelhouse enjoys glorious views and makes a lovely holiday home with enjoyable walks from the door. The property has been carefully restored to combine traditional features such as exposed stonework and an unusually spacious garden room that was formerly the wheelhouse for horses threshing corn.

The Wheelhouse is just a couple of miles from the pretty village of Swainby and well placed for visiting the market town of Thirsk and surrounding ‘Herriot Country’. A little further afield is the north east coast with its fishing villages and Whitby where Whitby Abbey stands majestically on the headland above the traditional working harbour. For the energetic there is good surfing at Saltburn. The North York Moorsand ’Heartbeat’ country provide stunning scenery and are wonderful for touring. Shops and pub 2½ miles.

Storey Farm Cottage is a cosy converted barn with stunning uninterrupted views down the valley. Sleeping up to six people and two well behaved dogs, it is set in a remote hamlet of Hartoft in the North York Moors National Park. Set on a small hill farm in 38 private acres, it is a perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle of life. Watch the wildlife from the patio or you could just unwind and enjoy the peace.

Once one of the farm buildings, is now a perfect semi-detached holiday cottage in the beautiful countryside of Hartoft, near Pickering. Set in 38 acres of private farmland with fields that are interspersed with woodland and streams. This peaceful secluded location has a wonderful view across the valley where there is a chance to see an abundance of wildlife including deer, foxes, owls and badgers. The cottage is spacious and benefits from having two bathrooms, one on the ground floor and one on the first floor. The cosy living room is welcoming with a wood burner for those winter walking breaks, curl up after a day walking the many trails around the cottage. It is a great place to base yourself while exploring the North York Moors.

Storey Farm Cottage is situated on the edge of Cropton Forest where you will find an abundance of walks and bike trails, as well as lots of wildlife. Dalby Forest is also just a short drive, home to one of the World Cup mountain bike trails. Challenge yourself with exhilarating runs, or for those who just want a leisurely bike ride or walk, there are acres of woodland paths to enjoy. Dalby Forest is also home to ’Go Ape’, a fantastic tree-top adventure activity course with zip wires, high ropes and challenging obstacles.

Rosedale Abbey is just over 3 miles from the cottage, once an industrial village with a thriving mining industry of iron ore, now a very pretty traditional Yorkshire village with a village green, stunning countryside and great cafés. It’s very popular with walkers and cyclists who often stop for their break on the village green and enjoy the local produce. The town of Pickering is a 10-minute drive, and home to the North Yorkshire Moors steam railway. Here you can catch the steam train across the moors from Pickering to Whitby, stopping off at Goathland and Grosmont, both featured in the TV programme ’Heartbeat’.

North Yorkshire is famous for its market towns and you are perfectly based with this cottage to visit them, including Pickering, Malton, Thirsk and Helmsley. These towns boast many independent shops, eateries and farmers’ markets. For those who enjoy the coast, Whitby is around a 30-minute drive away, a resort that is as popular in the winter as it is in the summer. Whitby Abbey is the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s book ’Dracula’ and is perched on the hillside overlooking the town. Beach 18 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 2½ miles.

Denton House, in the hamlet of Ravenscar, stands in an elevated position 600 feet above sea level overlooking Robin Hood’s Bay and the North York Moors. The horizon is 33 miles distant on a clear day. This detached home was built in 1993 from locally quarried stone blocks and has oil central heating and two log burning stoves. A garden room, also constructed from stone blocks is heated by electric oil radiator, and contains a sink unit, garden chairs, television with built in DVD player. The main feature of the room is a games table which can be used for either American pool, air hockey and table tennis. A lockable garage may be used for the storage of bikes. The garden, which overlooks a field immediately behind the house and towards the valley and bay, has two patio areas, one behind the house and the other next to the garden room. Both enjoy a sunny aspect for the majority of sunny days. Sheep graze in the field at certain times of the year and dog owners need to be aware that this is sheep country. There is a modern kitchen and a handy downstairs shower room. The second floor has an open plan landing with sofa looking out towards the moors.
Denton House is situated within a few hundred yards of the Cleveland Way route, which is perfect for guests who enjoy walking. There is a path leading down to a beach from the clifftop, or alternative road access to the beach via a track 1.5 miles away. There is also the old railway line which ran through Ravenscar between Scarborough and Whitby until the 1960’s which serves as a mainly gentle cycle track for the family. The station platform, tunnel and bridges are still in place along the 21 mile line. The beach below the cliffs at Ravenscar can be accessed by footpath across the golf course or by the disused railway line. Vehicle access is by a scenic single track road leading down the valley to a sandy beach. The foreshore of Robin Hood’s Bay is very well known for ammonite fossils and searching for them can be good fun for children of all ages.
The larger resorts of Whitby and Scarborough are just a short drive away. Whitby is a very busy working harbour and town, and is famous for the Dracula and Heartbeat locations and the exploits of Captainn Cook. Not forgetting award winning fish restaurants. Alternatively, Scarborough is a large Victorian seaside resort famous for its two bays, the North Bay being the quieter of the two. The long marine drive is over three miles of flat walking and is ideal for a pleasant evening stroll. Shop 8 miles, pub 2 miles and restaurant 500 yards.

With long, sandy beaches, dramatic cliffs and a fascinating history to discover, Whitby has something to offer everyone. A must is a climb up the 199 steps to the famous abbey, or a windswept clifftop walk along the Cleveland Way. Take a trip on the heritage steam train as it winds its way over the heather laced moorland from Whitby to the market town of Pickering. Visit ancient woodland such as Falling Foss or Dalby Forest. Or take a day trip to Scarborough, visiting the Peasholm Parks oriental gardens or Alpamare Waterpark with a spa overlooking the sea for an relaxing day enjoying the heated outdoor pools and the saunas. Here at Uptop Barn you can escape into the country with a little touch of luxury. Dating back to 1772, this was once a humble threshing barn which has been completely transformed. Here contemporary design meets local heritage, with some beautiful features such as the exposed stonework as well as vast windows embracing the views.
A private farm track leads you through the beautiful countryside to this incredibly rural location, where you truly feel like you are away from it all. Stepping inside Uptop Barn, it certainly has the "wow-factor". The living area is vast with a high beamed, vaulted ceiling, with windows showcasing the surrounding panorama across the National Park. In this open space you have the sleek and modern kitchen, complete with a large island, where you can enjoy dining in. In the centre of the room you have the sufficient seating where you can relax and soak up the scenery. The finishing touch is the wood burner, bathing the room in a warm glow. Glass doors from the living area open onto stone steps leading you down to the enclosed patio. There is also a day bed with a trundle which can be used by an additional two guests on request. Stepping off the mezzanine you enter the master bedroom, which is complete with an en suite bathroom with both a bath and a walk in shower. Less than a 40-minute drive away is the coast, where you have Saltburn, a surfers’ paradise, with a Victorian pier and cliff lift as well as a golden stretch of sand and shingle. Further down the coast you have Staithes, Runswick Bay and Whitby, all idyllic for days out. There are historical places of interest nearby such as the Helmsley Castle and walled gardens, Rievaulx Abbey, Guisborough Priory all waiting to be discovered, as well as the ancient city of York just an hour’s drive away. The North York Moors National Park is over 500 square miles of hills and dales, with ancient forest and woodlands, waterfalls and expanses of heather as far as the eye can see. Many of the walking trails feature pubs, where you can rest and enjoy a hearty meal.

The Yorkshire Cycle Hub is 12 miles away at Fryup, offering cycle hire, alongside an excellent café. Dalby Forest is well worth a visit and is also great for cycling, with cycle hire and other adventure activities including zip wiring through the treetops. During your stay be sure to visit Ampleforth Abbey with its serene Abbey Church and grounds to explore at your leisure. Ampleforth boasts a great shop and tea room open in the summer, as well as orchards and a cider mill. Nearby Hutton-le-Hole, a picturesque village, offers a fantastic day out and even has its home-made chocolate shop. Visit Ryedale Folk Museum sample the popular local ice cream and take a paddle in the stream. Fancy a stately home? Then look no further than Castle Howard, well worth a trip and a beautiful day out.
