This is a great destination all year round, a marvellous choice for those who enjoy the great outdoors or simply want a relaxing holiday with peace and fresh air, but with many delights to discover in the local area.
Tranmire Cottage is beautifully furnished throughout, with an authentic country charm. Careful attention to detail means it is both very well-equipped and comfortable. It also has the most fabulous freestanding roll top bath with a rain shower over - a grand feature, and great for relaxing in after a day out.
The cottage sleeps six in three bedrooms, with up to three dogs welcome to join you; there are many delightful walks nearby you and they will love. The owners provide route suggestions as well as walking maps and books, and a guide packed with information about the area.
Throughout the ground floor there is underfloor heating, ensuring the large reception area can be used for drying as well as storing outdoor gear if necessary. The living room also has a large range with an open fire, great for cosying up in the winter months. This room bathed in light from the large sash window with window seat, which looks out into the lawned garden and secure paddock beyond, which is shared with the neighbouring owners. There is a dedicated seating area and BBQ within the garden, so that guests can make the most of sunny afternoons during their stay. You can collect eggs from the hens which can stay in a secure paddock or free range, depending on guest requirements.
The quintessential country kitchen is ideal for creating home-cooked meals using these eggs or other fresh local ingredients from the many farm shops in the area. Savour time together around the dining table, planning the events for the days ahead over dinner.
Up on the first floor you have the most incredible master bedroom featuring that bath, as well as a king-size bed and a separate ensuite room with a toilet and washbasin. There is then also a double bedroom as well as a twin bedroom, both with wardrobes and drawers and served by a family bathroom which has a bath with shower over. All rooms have radiators or heated towel rails. Each bedroom is beautifully themed and named after different nearby dales: Rosedale – just to the North, the heart of the moors, Farndale – renowned for the blankets of daffodils that stretch out along the river through the spring, and Ryedale – which makes up the Vale of Pickering to the south.
Within Lastingham there is a historic church, several holy wells, and a village hall where community events, all open to visitors, are held. The Blacksmith’s Arms is extremely popular with locals and travellers alike for the quality and value of their food. Dogs are welcome in their large beer garden which has shelters and heaters, and a wood-fired pizza oven.
Lastingham is two miles from Hutton-le-Hole, creating a popular circular walk. That picturesque village has a deli/bakery, pub, teashops, craft workshops and the Ryedale Folk Museum. Nearby are the market towns of Helmsley, Kirkbymoorside and Pickering - all with attractive market squares, independent shops and quaint tea rooms. Malton, Yorkshire’s Food Capital, is only half an hour away, with regular markets and festivals.
The heritage steam railway from Pickering passes through Goathland and Grosmont on its way to Whitby – all great for a stop. English Heritage properties nearby include the castles at Pickering and Helmsley, the superb Rievaulx Abbey and Wheeldale Roman Road. Castle Howard, Eden Camp, the National Centre for Birds of Prey, and the National Trust’s Nunnington Hall are also popular attractions within easy reach.
About 45 minutes away you have the incredible Yorkshire Coastline to discover, with picturesque villages and towns, sandy beaches and hidden coves to explore. Saltburn-by-the-Sea, Whitby, Robin Hood’s Bay and Scarborough all make for a fabulous day out during your stay. Those travelling from further afield may also want to take the opportunity to visit York.

Varied walks can be enjoyed direct from the door, with the surrounding countryside adjoining the 400 acre estate of National Trust’s Hardcastle Crags. The beautiful wooded valleys with ravines, streams and waterfalls are rich in wildlife and contain over 25 miles of footpaths. There are also links to both the Pennine Way and Calderdale Way providing simply endless opportunities.
Further afield, guests will find that this holiday property is ideally positioned between both the Peak District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks, and a scenic drive can take you to Haworth’s Brontë Country, or visit where the TV series, ‘Last of the Summer Wine’, was filmed. Hebden Bridge itself has plenty of bars and restaurants, and even a famous old cinema where tea and cakes are served in the interval. Heptonstall is believed to be one of West Yorkshire’s best kept secrets, having a main street which has reportedly changed very little in the last 200 years, or you can just choose to relax in front of the gas fire wood burner style, in what is a truly outstanding holiday home. Sleeping up to six people and two well behaved dogs, it is set in a remote hamlet of Hartoft in the North York Moors National Park. Set on a small hill farm in 38 private acres, it is a perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle of life. Watch the wildlife from the patio or you could just unwind and enjoy the peace.

Set in 38 acres of private farmland with fields that are interspersed with woodland and streams. This peaceful secluded location has a wonderful view across the valley where there is a chance to see an abundance of wildlife including deer, foxes, owls and badgers. The cottage is spacious and benefits from having two bathrooms, one on the ground floor and one on the first floor. The cosy living room is welcoming with a wood burner for those winter walking breaks, curl up after a day walking the many trails around the cottage. Storey Farm Cottage is situated on the edge of Cropton Forest where you will find an abundance of walks and bike trails, as well as lots of wildlife. Dalby Forest is also just a short drive, home to one of the World Cup mountain bike trails. Challenge yourself with exhilarating runs, or for those who just want a leisurely bike ride or walk, there are acres of woodland paths to enjoy. Dalby Forest is also home to ’Go Ape’, a fantastic tree-top adventure activity course with zip wires, high ropes and challenging obstacles.

Rosedale Abbey is just over 3 miles from the cottage, once an industrial village with a thriving mining industry of iron ore, now a very pretty traditional Yorkshire village with a village green, stunning countryside and great cafés. It’s very popular with walkers and cyclists who often stop for their break on the village green and enjoy the local produce. The town of Pickering is a 10-minute drive, and home to the North Yorkshire Moors steam railway. Here you can catch the steam train across the moors from Pickering to Whitby, stopping off at Goathland and Grosmont, both featured in the TV programme ’Heartbeat’.

North Yorkshire is famous for its market towns and you are perfectly based with this cottage to visit them, including Pickering, Malton, Thirsk and Helmsley. These towns boast many independent shops, eateries and farmers’ markets. For those who enjoy the coast, Whitby is around a 30-minute drive away, a resort that is as popular in the winter as it is in the summer. Whitby Abbey is the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s book ’Dracula’ and is perched on the hillside overlooking the town. Beach 18 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 2½ miles.

A must is a climb up the 199 steps to the famous abbey, or a windswept clifftop walk along the Cleveland Way. Take a trip on the heritage steam train as it winds its way over the heather laced moorland from Whitby to the market town of Pickering. Visit ancient woodland such as Falling Foss or Dalby Forest. Or take a day trip to Scarborough, visiting the Peasholm Parks oriental gardens or Alpamare Waterpark with a spa overlooking the sea for an relaxing day enjoying the heated outdoor pools and the saunas.
