Dog-friendly Hotels South Downs

Converted from former farm buildings, these four holiday properties (two of which have been adapted for the disabled with shower chairs available), are in the Southdowns National Park. Properties 17320 and 17321 command fine views over the surrounding countryside. 17320 also has a worktop which has been lowered for wheelchair access to the sink in the kitchen. Situated in the grounds of the family farm (non-working), they are only 100 yards from the village of Compton with village shop and tea room with free wi-fi access. Enjoy peaceful walks along a bridle path leading to the South Downs Way, 2 miles designated as a National Park. The historic cathedral town of Chichester lies 10 miles away, with its cobbled streets adorned with tea rooms and restaurants, and the ornate cathedral. Scenic boat tours can be taken around the harbour. Goodwood and Fontwell races or polo at Cowdray are all within a short drive. Portsmouth, with shopping and leisure facilities, within easy reach. Hawking and falconry days can be arranged, prices on application and must be pre-booked direct with owner. Shop and pub 100 yards.

Set within the South Downs National Park, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this ground floor apartment, adjoining the owner’s home, lies in the pretty west Sussex village of Findon. A plethora of trails and walks are available, and the area is well known for its prize winning horses and trainers. You can spot the horses in action on the gallops, where you can also see barn owls and kestrels. Findon is home to a traditional Sheep Fair and Village Festival, which is held at Nepcote in September. Walk part of the 100-mile South Downs Way with historic woodlands where you can smell the intoxicating scent of the bluebells in the spring. Look out for roe deer and red kites, and you may even be lucky enough to see hares boxing. Paragliding, hang gliding, golf, zorbing, mountain boarding and water sports are all available nearby. The coastal town of Worthing, where you can stroll along the promenade or the award-winning pier, is 5 miles away. Other places to visit include RSPB Pulborough Brooks nature reserve, 8 miles, Parham House and Gardens, 7 miles, and Arundel with its historic castle, 10 miles. A little further afield is Petworth House (National Trust), 17 miles, and Goodwood, 19 miles. There is an open-air swimming pool in the village, open May - September (times vary). Beach 5 miles. The Horseshoe Annex is a Tardis of a property with lots of room in a very cosy space. As you walk into the property you are greeted by the kitchen/dining room which is well-equipped with everything you are going to need for this year’s staycation. There is a lovely living room and family bathroom. There is a kingsize bedroom and a twin room. The grounds are shared with the owners, but you do have your own piece of garden to the side of the annex. Situated in Steyning at the north end of the River Adur gap in the South Downs, 4 miles north of the coastal town of Shoreham-by-Sea. Individual shops, stunning architecture, imposing castle and riverside location make this a must spend day or two during your holiday. The WWT Wetland Centre, Swanbourne Lake and South Downs National Park with its pretty villages and fabulous hiking opportunities are all within 5 minutes. Numerous stately homes and gardens are dotted around the area. Goodwood with its world famous motor circuit and horse racing venue is a 20 minute easy drive. The pretty grass runway airport here offers the chance to take an airborne sightseeing experience offering memorable views of the coastline including Portsmouth Dockyards, Gunwharf Quays and the Spinnaker Tower that by road are a 40 minute drive. Lunch or tea airside in this stunning location is also possible. Dogs are welcomed everywhere at Goodwood. Two championship golf courses are on the estate and spa experiences available at the hotel. Tours and afternoon tea are available also here at the stately home. Chichester with its cathedral and Festival Theatre are a short drive, Brighton being 18 miles distant. Day trips to the Isle of Wight and HMS Victory and the Mary Rose can also be enjoyed. National Trust homes such as Goodwood House, Petworth House and Uppark House, Weald and Downland Living Museum and West Dean Gardens are all also worth a visit.
