In the summer months, spend your days lazing on the decked terrace or in the winter months, light the chiminea and warm your toes whilst you enjoy spending time with your loved one. With the owner and her friendly dog living next door, you can also enjoy shared use of a lawned garden with a beautiful summerhouse, perfect for whiling away the hours with a good book. The area is a delight for walkers and cyclists alike, with an abundance of routes to choose from that take in the breathtaking scenery that can be found in all directions. Enjoy a countryside walk, right from your doorstep, down into nearby Staithes and joining onto the Cleveland Way as it snakes across cliff tops and down into hidden coves and bays. Staithes is popular with tourists and has a number of traditional pubs, a coffee shop and even its own independent art gallery. It has a fascinating history of pirates and smugglers, as well as links to Captain Cook who worked here as a child. Nearby Saltburn-by-the-Sea is a fabulous up and coming holiday destination with plenty of places to eat and drink as well as a pier, and is well known in the area as a surfer’s paradise with a number of schools for those wanting to give it a try. There is also horse riding, fishing at Scaling Dam and golf nearby.
The Gothic town of Whitby is just 13 miles away and is famous for its links to Bram Stoker’s Dracula. It offers a hectic schedule of festivals and events all year round including the Goth Weekend, Folk Week and its own Regatta, as well as cobbled streets full of independent shops and traders. The Whitby Abbey towers over the town and can be reached by climbing the famous 199 steps and affords fantastic views of the town and out to sea. There are plenty of traditional dog friendly pubs with live music, tea rooms and delis, as well as some fantastic places to eat. Why not catch a tourist boat out to sea in search of minke whales and seals, or enjoy a trip on the steam train that snakes its way through the National Park into Heartbeat Country. There are plenty of seaside towns and villages to explore along this dramatic coastline, or take a trip to the walled city of York with its many attractions. Situated at Staithes, near Whitby, these former World War I army bunkers are in an idyllic position close to the countryside and sea. Four of the barracks have been ingeniously and tastefully transformed to provide good quality accommodation retaining much rustic character and charm. The remaining four lodges retain their near original condition as a visual reminder of their former function. Each refurbished lodge has the added advantage of free parking, an outdoor sitting area and bike parking racks.
Situated just off the Cleveland Way, there are many fine moorland and cliff top walks. There is a golf course and driving range in Brotton, 6¾ miles away, and at Scaling Reservoir, 7¼ miles, there is sailing and fishing. There is a leisure centre 2 miles down the road and a 2-minute stroll down the cobbled street brings you to the centre of the picturesque fishing village with its small harbour nestling beneath rugged cliffs. Step back in time and walk the quaint narrow passages, as Captain James Cook himself must have done. Here in Staithes there are village shops, pubs, cafés and a restaurant, and in 2020 the village was featured on the BBC programme ’Gone Christmas Fishing’ with Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer. Why not travel on Harry Potter’s Hogwarts Express (the North Yorkshire Moors Railway) through ’Heartbeat’ country, or visit Whitby and its famous abbey which is 11 miles away.

Oakridge is a stunning example of 1800s architecture with a luxurious, contemporary interior. This semi-detached property offers a large sociable kitchen/dining room for family meals and playing games in front of the Aga before retiring to the living room. There is a large conservatory that looks out onto the lovely garden, and the utility room has a separate shower room which is great for rinsing off after a dip in the hot tub. The kitchen patio doors open out onto the hot tub and stone-built barbecue area, and there is a separate quieter area at the far end of the garden if you just want to relax and unwind. There is a ground floor bedroom and shower room, and the spacious first floor master bedroom benefits from both a spa bath and a fantastic shower. The large landing on the first floor is perfect for relaxing with a good book.
Hinderwell is a village with excellent local amenities including a good butchers, convenience store, a local pub and a tea room all just a short walk from your doorstep. This quaint village is just a mile from the picturesque fishing village of Runswick Bay, which boasts a sandy cove with opportunities for fossil hunting and rock pooling, yet right in the North York Moors National Park. Head north or south on the Cleveland Way and visit some of the amazing coastal gems such as Staithes, Robin Hood’s Bay, Sandsend or Saltburn.
The bustling town of Whitby is a short drive or bus ride away where you will find so much to see and do. There is a 3 mile stretch of golden sandy beach, traditional amusement arcades and regular boat trips out to sea in search of minke whales and dolphins. There are many bistros and restaurants ranging from award-winning fish and chips to fine dining as well as tea rooms, coffee shops and pubs with live music. If you’re feeling energetic why not attempt the 199 steps up to the abbey that towers over Whitby.
You can drive inland to enjoy the natural beauty and some amazing heritage sites such as abbeys and monasteries within the National Park or catch a steam train as it snakes through the lush countryside to destinations such as Goathland and Pickering. There is a huge diversity of things to do in the area from surfing to golfing, and there is an abundance of walking and cycling tracks. The more traditional seaside town of Scarborough is just along the coast with its two huge bays, and the walled city of York is well worth a visit. Beach ¾ mile. Through the inner hallway that offers storage and access to the bathroom, you will reach the cosy living/dining room, which is a welcome haven after a hard day’s walking or exploring the east coast. The French doors in the living room open out on the patio, perfect to sit and enjoy a glass of wine. The bedroom is on the first floor and offers a Velux window suitable to enjoy the views from. Outside you will also have private use of a hot tub to relax in, and the owner has thoughtfully provided bath robes and slippers for the hot tub, and complementary toiletries. With a wood burner in the living area, you are sure to stay warm and cosy.

Elizabeth Cottage is a gorgeous terraced cottage situated in the picture-postcard village of Hinderwell, on the Yorkshire Coast. This dog-friendly cottage makes an idyllic retreat for two people in which to relax and unwind and take in all that the area has to offer. The cosy accommodation has been attractively furnished to offer guests a comfortable stay. The quirky living room has exposed brickwork and an open fire set within the original cast iron fireplace, a great space to curl up after a day exploring the coastline. There is also a Smart TV and DVD player for your entertainment. There is a staircase of two small flights of six steps separated by a small landing. It is a little steep but has a handrail. On the first floor the double bedroom has stripped wooden floors and a large window with seat. The comfortable bed, Hypnos mattress and crisp bedding ensures a good night’s sleep. The stylish bathroom with shower over bath completes this floor. Externally there is an enclosed, south-facing courtyard with a terraced patio and garden furniture. It has been described as a sun trap by many guests. A great place to enjoy a morning coffee or evening glass of wine as you watch the sun go down.
The cottage is close to two village inns and there is a direct bus route to Whitby and surrounding bays, ideal for avoiding parking at busy times. The bus runs regularly 7 days a week from morning until late evening. The beautiful beaches of Runswick Bay, Staithes and Sandsend are within easy reach. There are amenities on hand including a butchers/grocery store, church, village hall and fish and chip shop. Hinderwell is an ideal base for walking holidays too with many coastal walking routes and the Cleveland Way close by. This is the perfect location for exploring further inland as well, with the whole of the North York Moors just waiting to be explored. St Hilda’s Rest is a barn conversion tucked away in a secluded part of the small village of Hinderwell on an award-winning accommodation development. It is close to the seaside town of Staithes and about 9 miles from Whitby. Explore the heritage coast and sandy beaches of Yorkshire with seaside towns such as Saltburn, Whitby and Scarborough within easy reach, and fishing villages including Staithes, Runswick Bay and Robin Hood’s Bay. Historic homes, abbeys and castles abound in this area with Newby Hall and Gardens, Castle Howard, the castle ruins in Helmsley and Rievaulx Abbey in the vicinity. Within the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, East Ayton is a village just a few minutes’ drive from the seafront at Scarborough. The village has all the amenities you could wish for with a post office, shop, garage and local pub as well as an excellent fish restaurant. The cottage is just off the main street on the lane leading further into the National Park and towards Hackness. This property is an ideal place for the walkers or cyclists amongst you, with great trails right on your doorstep. From the large riverside orchard garden there are open views across the valley to the castle that dates back to 1390. Cycling is also very popular in the area as this forms part of the Tour de Yorkshire route. The Dalby Forest is close by with cycle trails for all abilities and home to the World Cup Trail, a challenging 4 mile route, or for beginners, there are plenty more leisurely routes. The cottage is an ideal base to visit all that Yorkshire has to offer from the North Yorkshire Moors to the Wolds and the beautiful east coast, and coarse fishing is available direct onto the River Derwent at the bottom of the garden with brown trout and grayling.
