Modern day Staithes is a must for anyone visiting the Yorkshire coast and has a good selection of pubs, shops and tea rooms. Staithes is still home to a RNLI lifeboat station, and a small fleet of cobles (fishing boats) land their catch of fish, crab and lobster. There are also boat trips for birdwatching, fishing and whale watching available. An ’Illusion Trail’ guides visitors around the network of backstreets and alleyways. The best views of the town can be enjoyed from the Cleveland Way which runs down the cliff to the seashore. The Cleveland Way stretches its way along this dramatic coastline and is a firm favourite with walkers as it drops into many hidden bays and coves such as Robin Hood’s Bay and Saltburn-by-the-Sea.
The wonderful town of Whitby is just 10 miles away with its regular events and festivals including the Goth Weekend, a regatta and regular live music events to complement its many fabulous restaurants and bars, tea rooms and delis. Try climbing the 199 steps up to the abbey and St Mary’s Church from where you can take in the breathtaking views down into the town and out to sea.

Head inland to enjoy a myriad of walking and cycling routes that the National Park has to offer, enjoy a warm welcome in one of the many village inns dotted across the moors, or take it easy on board a steam train journey into the heart of this beautiful part of the world. Surf enthusiasts will enjoy Saltburn-by-the-Sea with its numerous surf schools and there are plenty of courses for the golfers. Seaton Court has a fascinating past, the hall was named after the de Seton dynasty who resided from 1130 to 1307 and whose family made allegiances with and marriages to the Scottish Royal family. Passed down through generations, before slipping into disrepair. The present owner (who is descended from one of the previous residents Sir Francis Bigod) purchased the estate in 2002 and employed a team of specialist masons and craftsmen who have been lovingly rebuilding and restoring this incredible place of local heritage. Located in private grounds on the edge of Staithes on the breathtakingly beautiful North Yorkshire Coast, surrounded by the heather clad North Yorkshire Moors.
Stepping inside Seaton Court you enter into the hallway, where your walking boots and coats can be stored in the utility room. Through into the open plan living room with a dining area and a bespoke hand crafted kitchen looking out onto your own patio with the rolling countryside beyond. Cast your eyes up into the incredible supporting beams and the ancient hand carved masonry above the feature fire place. Each cottage here has wonderful unique features and charm, showcasing its heritage. At the front of Highfields you have the driveway with parking for two, whilst at the rear of the property the lawned garden faces the coastline. Here you can enjoy the views over the sea and along the cliff tops, with a raised decking area, accessed by a ramp for accessibility, making the most of the breath-taking panoramic scenery. You can watch the tide ebb and flow revealing the most glorious golden stretch of beach. Glass double doors lead from the decking into the living room, where you can sit back and soak up the scenery, or if you can drag your eyes away you can watch some TV, in the warm glow from the wood burner. The kitchen is well equipped with everything needed to create all your favourite meals, which you can enjoy at the dining table, again with beautiful sea views. Or when the weather is glorious, soak up the sun’s rays out on the decking with a barbecue. On the ground floor you also have a double bedroom with an en-suite bathroom. From your doorstep you join the Cleveland Way which runs along the cliff edge linking scenic coastal villages and bays from Filey in the south and up to Saltburn in the north, then continuing into the North York National Park. From the top of the village you can follow the footpath down a steep slope towards the bay where you have a cluster of historic houses teetering above the sea. There’s a small café as well as a quaint pub, exploring the winding footpaths between the cottages is like stepping back in time. The beach is beautiful, as well as being both dog and child friendly all year round. For days out you will be spoilt for choice.
Further north along the coast is Staithes and Saltburn, the latter a surfers’ paradise with a Victorian pier and tram, and beyond the enormous beach going to Marske and Redcar. To the south at Sandsend the waves dramatically crash over the sea wall at high tide, Whitby, bursting with history and drawing guests from around the world; the tangle of cobbled streets in the village of Robin Hood’s Bay cling to the cliff edge, with houses spilling right down to the water’s edge. Perhaps take the heritage steam train from Whitby on an adventure across the Esk valley, there are some quaint villages to visit along the way. For those who love the water you can join a local surf school, or row along the river Esk in the village of Ruswarp. For history lovers there are a selection of museums in Whitby as well as the nautical museum in Staithes and the mining museum in Skinningrove. Whitby Abbey and Guisborough Priory are both beautiful ruins, which are picture perfect.

Cherry Garth Cottages are located in the centre of Thornton le Dale, ’Yorkshire’s little gem’. Cherry Blossom has been named after the cherry trees which border the garden. The cottage has been built from beautiful traditional Yorkshire stone, and is tucked away in the grounds of the owner’s home Cherry Garth. It has an open plan living area with a welcoming wood burner to snuggle up in front of after a busy day out exploring the spectacular Yorkshire coast and countryside, and upon arrival you will be welcomed with a lovely welcome pack with tea, coffee and biscuits. There are lovely views from the property onto the garden and the bedroom window overlooks the paddock, where sheep graze.

The picturesque village of Thornton le Dale is located on the edge of the North York Moors, a mere one mile from Pickering. From here you can take a ride on the famous steam train to Grosmont, Goathland (aka Aidensfield in the classic TV series Heartbeat) and the seaside town of Whitby where you can climb the 199 steps to Whitby Abbey. Those looking for a quieter pace of life may prefer to walk the many footpaths and bridleways over the North York Moors.
