Head into Wensleydale and visit the market town of Leyburn with an array of interesting shops, cafés and pubs. It can be reached via a short two mile walk across open countryside. Close by is Middleham, with its famous castle and horse training stables as well as West Witton, with its award-winning restaurant and onwards towards beautiful Aysgarth Falls and the bustling market town of Hawes. Driving up to Swaledale, visit Reeth and Gunnerside or further up the dale to Muker, enjoying some amazing walks and breathtaking views along the way. Hinderwell is a village with excellent local amenities including a good butchers, convenience store, a local pub and a tea room all just a short walk from your doorstep. This quaint village is just a mile from the picturesque fishing village of Runswick Bay, which boasts a sandy cove with opportunities for fossil hunting and rock pooling, yet right in the North York Moors National Park. Head north or south on the Cleveland Way and visit some of the amazing coastal gems such as Staithes, Robin Hood’s Bay, Sandsend or Saltburn.
The bustling town of Whitby is a short drive or bus ride away where you will find so much to see and do. There is a 3 mile stretch of golden sandy beach, traditional amusement arcades and regular boat trips out to sea in search of minke whales and dolphins. There are many bistros and restaurants ranging from award-winning fish and chips to fine dining as well as tea rooms, coffee shops and pubs with live music. If you’re feeling energetic why not attempt the 199 steps up to the abbey that towers over Whitby.

This detached barn conversion is tucked away in a hidden valley within the Yorkshire Dales National Park, yet just 2 miles away from the bustling village of Grassington, which is well served with pubs, restaurants and individual country shops. The village also hosts the Grassington Festival, where well known stars perform, or near Christmas it holds the Dickensian Festival to really get people in a festive mood. Kate’s Cottage is a mid-terraced, stone built cottage set in the heart of the Castle Howard Estate between Malton and Helmsley. This romantic little cottage is packed with character providing the perfect hideaway for a couple who enjoy cycling, walking and exploring this beautiful part of North Yorkshire.
Downstairs provides an open plan living space, with beamed ceilings, stone floors and a traditional window seat offering views out along the village. Comfortable seating surrounds the traditional wood burner, perfect for those cooler winter evenings. The bespoke kitchen is well-equipped with a Belfast sink, granite worktops and a quarry tiled floor. The breakfast bar is adjacent and makes a lovely addition to this sociable space. As with many old Yorkshire cottages, the stairs to the first floor are tucked away behind a wooden door and lead straight into the double bedroom. With views of the village and the luxury of an en-suite with roll top bath and underfloor heating, this part of the cottage really does have a homely feel. The ancient sea port of Whitby is just a short drive over the moors, eight miles, a colourful harbour leads to the three mile stretch of sandy beach overlooked and almost protected by the ancient abbey ruins and St Mary’s church. The brave (and fit) can take the 199 steps up to the abbey ruins where panoramic views over Whitby across to Sandsend can be enjoyed. Explore the smugglers coves of Robin Hoods Bay, Runswick Bay and Staithes or visit the more elegant seaside resort of Scarborough, Britain’s first ever seaside resort.
