Riding, golfing, fishing and canoeing are available locally. Hay-on-Wye and Brecon are well worth a visit, also within easy driving distance are Ludlow, Hereford and Leominster. This beautiful, single-storey, detached cottage is set in the heart of Knapton village in central Herefordshire. Formerly it was an old cart shed used for storing the carts over the winter period and is thought to be 250-300 years old. It is set near a Roman road with an old hill fort nearby. The Cart Shed has been thoughtfully furnished throughout with many hand-crafted items adorning the property. The cottage has been lovingly renovated over a period of time by the current owners who are as keen on the exterior appearance as the interior, with landscaped grounds which guests are free to wander and enjoy. The owners, who live next door, have a smallholding with a variety of animals including pigs, geese, chickens and bees, as well as the owners’ two friendly dogs that may want to greet you. The local restaurant and pub is within walking distance.
The location is not only ideal for exploring Herefordshire but also Gloucestershire, Monmouthshire, the Brecon Beacons and Shropshire. There are numerous cider museums and working farms to visit as well as the Black and White Village Trail which takes in some of the most beautiful villages in the UK. Hereford Cathedral is home to the Hereford Mappa Mundi which is one of the world’s medieval treasures. There are National Trust properties including Berrington Hall, Croft Castle and The Weir Garden. The Forest of Dean is within easy reach with Go Ape, walks and cycle trails. There are some lovely walks from the door, particularly to Garway Hill, said to be the most beautiful place in Herefordshire, offering stunning views over 5 surrounding counties. The cottage is also ideally placed for you to experience canoeing along the Wye River, swimming in the River Monnow, or hiking on Offa’s Dyke or The Three Castles Way. Horse-riding, rock climbing, canoeing, fishing and caving are all within easy reach in the Wye Valley, the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons. The cottage is also close to the Forest of Dean with its cycling paths, picnic sites, Sculpture Trail and family attractions such as Go Ape. A 20-minute drive away is the cathedral city of Hereford, and the market towns of Ross-on-Wye and Monmouth, which host a variety of quality restaurants and independent shops. For sightseeing, memorable days out can be had at the Blaenavon World Heritage Site, the Roman Caerleon, and Goodrich, Raglan or Eastnor Castles. On the cottage’s ground floor, beyond the entrance porch, you will find the kitchen, with its beautiful wooden work surfaces, food preparation island, and the easy-to-use, hard-to-beat electric Everhot cooker. The kitchen is well equipped for making casseroles, cakes, and tray bakes. The open-plan dining room is the perfect space for enjoying meals with family and friends around the large farmhouse-style table. There are two steps up into the living room with its large, comfy sofas, the wood burner and a smart TV. If you want to get away from the television there is another living space in the glorious sunroom, which has folding glass doors leading out onto the south-facing front patio. There is a ground-floor toilet and a separate utility room with a tumble dryer. On the first floor you will find three bedrooms, one with a super kingsize bed, and two with twin beds. The bathroom has the best views from the cottage and has a stand-alone roll-top bath, shower cubicle, handbasin and toilet. Off-road parking for up to three cars is available in the gravel yard opposite the cottage, just across the road, where there are also some fruit trees.

Whitewells Farm were the first holiday cottages in Herefordshire to have been converted from existing farm buildings into individual self-catering holiday homes in 1978. They all feature original beams throughout, half-cruck trusses and some have vaulted ceilings and beamed room divisions. Converted from one end of the medieval barn, this upside down cottage has two bedrooms and a bathroom on the ground floor. The very large double bedroom has a vanity unit, and second bedroom has a single bed. The bathroom has an over the bath rainfall shower. The staircase leads up to the kitchen/dining area, and the wonderfully beamed living room with outstanding views of the local countryside.

Frome Valley Vineyard is only a mile away, and stands on the banks of the River Frome at Paunton. The vineyard is surrounded by orchards, hop yards and rolling meadows. If you fancy some adventure, there’s paint balling, a bowling alley and horse riding nearby.
