In the heart of this small Cornish hamlet, the barns (refs 30108, 30109, 30110 and 30111) are furnished and fitted to provide a comfortable base from which to explore the many attractions that Cornwall has to offer.
Each barn has a well-equipped kitchen as well as open-plan living. Each has its own sitting-out area, which is ideal for watching the wildlife and al fresco dining. Each property also has access to electric car charging points which a charge for use however if you require using the charging points you must bring your own lead. This barn has the private use of a hot tub, but please note the first night the temperature may not of quite reached it’s optimal temperature due to the replenishment of fresh water post cleaning the tub.
There are no local amenities as it is in a hamlet, but only a 5 minute car journey to the local village; we suggest you look at the welcome folder in the cottage to familiarise yourself to your surroundings and to discover what amenities are local to your stay. Guests are close to the coastal path and if you walk north, you will reach Tintagel, the mythical home of King Arthur, with its array of shops, pubs and restaurants. A little further on, Boscastle with its picturesque harbour is a must. A small beach can be reached on foot, approximately ½ mile away. Travelling down the coast, guests will come to Port Isaac, where the TV series ’Doc Martin’ is filmed, and further down the coast, visit the beautiful sandy surfing beach at Polzeath and the dunes at Rock where you can take a ferry across to Padstow. From Padstow, with its working harbour, shops, pubs and restaurants, you can hire bikes and cycle the Camel Trail to Wadebridge and beyond to Bodmin.
Close by is Bodmin Moor, unspoilt moorland at its best, and for walkers the tors on the moor are a must. Further down the coast is Newquay, with its famous surfing beaches, Blue Reef Aquarium and Zoo and if you travel to the south coast, you will find Looe, Fowey and Mevagissey, just a few of the charming coastal villages. For cycling enthusiasts, there is a cycle hub at Lanhydrock, with some wonderful forest routes to be taken. Trethosa is a pretty Hamlet in the Parish of St Stephen, situated between St Austell and Newquay and just a short drive from the A30 means great access to all the delights Cornwall has to offer. There is a rich mining heritage in the area, with China Clay being the mineral of choice. If you wish to learn more, a visit to the China Clay Museum during your stay is well worth a trip. The golden sands and crashing surf of the beaches around Newquay are a 15-minute drive to the north. The Eden Project, Carlyon Bay and the Roseland peninsula with its picturesque fishing villages are 20 minutes to the south. The cathedral city of Truro and a wide range of shops, pubs and restaurants are also within easy reach.
To the north is Newquay and these days, its excellent surfing waters are the town’s main industry, whereas it once used to be a major export port for the counties mining efforts and a north coast port for pilchard fisheries. Fistral Beach holds many surfing competitions throughout the year. Both the Women’s and Men’s Gig Championships are held here, as are a balloon festival and surf and lifesaving events. Newquay Zoo now houses 130 different species in sub-tropical gardens in the centre of the town. 2 Miles away is The Lappa Valley Steam Railway which, offers both the old and young an interesting day out.
The Cathedral City of Truro is in Cornwall’s heart and offers a wealth of facilities for the visitor. Dominated by the stunning cathedral, it is one of the south west’s most attractive cities. Lemon Quay plays host to many events throughout the year, including the Cornwall Food & Drink Festival in the Autumn and the famous Truro Fatstock Show just before Christmas. Bude, EnglandSandy Cott is a perfect little holiday lodge, on the popular Penstowe Holiday Park. Situated just north of Bude, with fabulous access to all the glorious beaches, including Northcott Mouth and Sandymouth, which is just south of Duckpool beach at the bottom of the Coombe Valley and Stowe Woods. They all have glorious expanses of golden sand at low tide. Bude itself has a wealth of restaurants, pubs, cafes, and galleries, a great playground and historic castle and canal. Further north and you are over the border into Devon, where Clovelly is well worth a visit. St Just, EnglandStone Farm Cottage is a beautifully presented granite cottage with rolling rural views derelict tin mine engine houses dot the landscape and there are magnificent sea views from the top of the garden. A small stream trickles through the garden and there is access to a shared (with the owners) covered swimming pool which is heated and available from the beginning of June until the beginning of September.
Inside is a stylishly decorated, open plan living space with doors leading to the garden, original beams, and a cosy wood burner to warm you up after a day exploring the dramatic coastal scenery or checking out the surf. The well-equipped kitchen area is a joy to cook in, why not take you holiday feast outside and dine al fresco or fire up the BBQ on a beautiful summer evening. To one side of the living space is the master bedroom with kingsize bed and en-suite wet room. Bojewyan is a small settlement to the east of Pendeen which is famous for its industrial heritage. Pendeen village has a general store and Post office and there are four local pubs serving food. Three of these, as well as a takeaway fish and chip shop and a Spanish tapas restaurant, are all within a 2-minute drive or a 10-minute walk from the property.
The St Just area has a rich mining history and has now been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and is also in one of the twelve Cornish Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Pendeen Lighthouse and the secluded Portheras Cove and beach are a mile to the north. The coastline in this part of Cornwall is simply outstanding and the road from St Ives to St Just is possibly the most scenic drive in the county. Perranporth is one of the most popular beaches on the Atlantic Coast of Cornwall, the golden sands extend for up to 3 miles all the way to Ligger Point, dogs are welcomed on the beach all year but in July and August during the day they need to be on a lead, however, there are acres of sand dunes where they can be released. Due to the vast expanse of sand, it rarely feels crowded. Lifeguard cover is there during the season for that extra peace of mind. 100m from Beach Bungalow, just the far side of a sand dune is a fantastic bar renowned for being the country’s only bar that is literally on the beach. Holywell Bay, just to the north, is one of the finest beaches in Cornwall. There are 2 village shops and two inns. Glendurgan Gardens, run by the National Trust, hold a 176-year-old laurel maze and the ’Giants Stride’ swing is very popular with children.
