Tucked away in the heart of the mid-Devon countryside lies Hazelnut Lodge. There are a number of National Trust properties in the area, most notably Castle Drogo and Arlington Court. Also within easy reach (20 miles) is Powderham Castle. This remarkable 14th century castle, set in a beautiful deer park on the banks of the River Exe, has been home to the same family since 1391. Visitors are encouraged to explore the picturesque gardens, discover the interior beauty of the castle and to take part in some of the events which are held throughout the year. The wonderful RHS gardens at Rosemoor and the Dartington Crystal Factory are worth a visit and both these attractions are based at Great Torrington. Chulmleigh town centre is now a conservation area and the rich grassland found here is home to the largest population of otters in any natural area in England. The area provides access to an abundance of leisure activities including walking, cycling, fishing, golf and horse riding along with a number of historic houses and gardens in the vicinity.

Guests can enjoy the best of coast and country with Dartmoor and Exmoor nearby, as well as the North Devon coast in one direction and the cathedral city of Exeter in the other, all within an hour’s drive.

There are two rivers (The Little Dart and Huntacott) meandering through the grounds and a private fishing lake where guests can enjoy free fly and coarse fishing and catch carp, rudd, chubb, roach, brown trout and tench. There is also complimentary fishing on both rivers where brown trout, sea trout and salmon can be caught together with coarse fish.

Sheepwash Square House located in a quaint North Devon village is a 1600’s Grade II listed thatched house accommodating up to twelve guests.

Perfect for families or groups of friends with spacious rooms and a ‘cottage chic’ theme with wooden shutters throughout. The well equipped kitchen is a delight with everything you could need, the large island makes a great place to socialize whilst cooking under the beautiful vaulted ceiling. The large living room overlooks the village square, and has a beautiful fireplace, wood burner and upright piano. The six bedrooms each have tea and coffee facilities, a writing desk and lamp, fluffy towels and quality Egyptian bedding. On the first floor the first bedroom, the ‘George Room’, is spacious, with double aspect views over the village square and the rear fields. It has a kingsize double bed, chaise longue, armchair with footstool and rustic hanging rails. The second bedroom, the ‘Jones Room’, has a single bed, hanging rail, small armchair and a view of the village square. The third bedroom, the ‘Martin Room’, has a double bed and an en-suite shower room. The fourth bedroom, the ‘Dufty Room’, has a double bed and a small armchair. The fifth bedroom, the ‘Hewitt Room’, has a double bed, French style chaise longue and a hanging rail. It has a fabulous en-suite shower room with a corner shower cubicle. The sixth bedroom on the ground floor, the ‘John Slee Room’, has a day bed which converts into a double, electric wood burner, massage chair and an armchair. There is an upstairs bathroom with shower over P-shaped bath, and a downstairs shower room with walk-in shower.

There is a lot of outdoor space including a charming walled garden, along with a studio, including mini home gym with exercise equipment, a 50” TV with Netflix and Sky, armchairs, massage chair, rocking chair and a small library. The lawned walled garden and courtyard has lots of seating with parasols for sunny days. There is a delightful summer house to the rear of the garden and a firepit for sultry evenings. The ’dog lobby’ by the back door is ideal for a well-behaved pooch and it has a dog flap which leads into the courtyard. There are also some dog beds and spare leads that guests can use if needed.

Sheepwash is a delightful base to explore North Devon. There is a village shop which is open several times a week selling fresh local supplies and it has a post office. The local pub does takeaways and organises fishing on the River Torridge. Just a little further by car are the market towns of Holsworthy, Hatherleigh and Okehampton. Westward Ho! in Devon or Bude in Cornwall are within a 40-minute drive. Westward Ho! has a long golden sandy beach backed by a pebble ridge. On the northern end is the Northern Burrows, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, with sand dunes, salt marsh, grassland, rocky shore and is teeming with wildlife. A shorter drive south takes you to Dartmoor National Park where you can have a delightful pub lunch in the village of Belstone or take a walk on the moors and see Dartmoor ponies. Or catch a ferry to Lundy Island from Bideford, where you can also hire bikes and head along the Tarka Trail. Beach 18¼ miles. Shop 5½ miles, pub and restaurant 90 yards.

The owners of the farm are keen for guests to experience life on the farm and there are opportunities to see the cows being milked, feeding the calves and collecting eggs from the chickens. There is also an on-site shop selling local meats and other produce as well as some of the freshest milk around. Guests can enjoy the surrounding land with walks around the farm. There are well-stocked lakes for those who fancy a relaxing day of fishing.

West Middlewick Farm is located just outside the Wiltshire village of Nomansland. With well-maintained roads, the farm is in a great position to get out and about and experience all this lovely area of Devon has to offer.

The popular market town of South Molton has a weekly farmers’ market and a variety of shops, antique and curio shops, pubs and restaurants. Barnstaple, 12 miles, has a theatre, cinema and leisure activities, and places of interest include the Museum of North Devon, Pannier Market, 14th-century St Anne’s Chapel and 18th-century Queen Anne’s Walk. Other family attractions in the area include RHS gardens at Rosemoor, The Big Sheep, The Milky Way, Kilarney Springs, Exmoor Zoo and the Dinosaur Park. Spectacular beaches at Saunton, Croyde, Putsborough, Woolacombe and Westward Ho! are all within easy driving distance.
