There are lots of local walks and footpaths close by, the village has three pubs and a renowned restaurant just a short walk away. The nearest supermarkets are 13 miles away in Bideford and Bude, but the local shops in the village are well stocked. Just a ¼ mile away is a post office, village store, café, fish and chip shop, vet, doctors surgery, a pottery and art galleries.

For a wider range of amenities, head to the market town of South Molton. The property is ideally situated for exploring all of North Devon and Exmoor. There is superb scenery and walking on the South West Coastal Path and many places to visit to make your holiday memorable. The Victorian villages of Lynmouth and Lynton, famous for the Watersmeet Gorge (National Trust), the valley of the rocks and the funicular cliff railway, are well worth a visit, or looking towards Minehead, visitors can go back in time on the scenic West Somerset Steam Railway, or visit the enchanting medieval Dunster Castle (also National Trust), with its beautiful terraced gardens, deer park and mill, all making for an interesting day out. Nearer to home, guests can wine and dine in the pubs and a Michelin 1* restaurant nearby. There is also fishing, golf and cycling available. Children can take part in bush-craft courses and activities ranging from camp fire cooking and toasting marshmallows to bug hunting and learning woodland skills - a day with the experienced staff will ensure youngsters come away with a new found love of the great outdoors. The Ashcombe Village Club opens on various evenings providing cheap beer in a cheerful atmosphere, event evenings, traditional summer fêtes and shows. Guests at Ashcombe can also enjoy foraged and wild walks that take place every Tuesday and last for around two hours. You can discover the simple pleasure of foraging from the abundance of wild foods in the Devon countryside, and also experience the perfect evening out dining under canopies in the Ashcombe Woodland at the Woodland Kitchen, open on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Walk in the wild beauty of Dartmoor with its abundance of wildlife and dramatic landscapes, or visit the numerous nearby National Trust properties including Agatha Christie’s house, Greenway. Steam trains travel from Kingswear to Paignton and Totnes to Buckfastleigh. Visit historic Dartmouth with bustling boat harbour, castle, contemporary art galleries and boutiques and brilliant Regatta Week and Air Show. Salcombe with its beaches, sailing and water sports is also easily accessible, as well as Blackpool Sands, Slapton and picturesque Dittisham. Slightly further afield, East Cornwall and the Eden Project are within an hour’s drive. Other activities of interest include Backwater Adventures to explore Devon’s rivers and countryside with professional guidance and supervision, or Rock Solid Coasteering to explore the Jurassic coastline.

There are four spacious en-suite double bedrooms furnished with designer fabrics and each one with a unique theme - French, rustic Mexican, mahogany sleigh bed, and one with a contemporary nickel bedstead. On summer evenings, dine al fresco on the long stone patio running the length of the barn, with patio table and chairs looking out over uninterrupted views.
Chapman House (ref hnz) is a superb, spacious conversion of an 18th-century stables and coach house with breathtaking views of the North Devon coastline out to Lundy Island, and beyond to the Atlantic Ocean. The living area on the first floor takes full advantage of sea views with a large balcony opening from the spacious kitchen/dining room - ideal to enjoy a lazy breakfast or relax and watch magnificent sunsets. Completed to a very high specification, the holiday house is very comfortable and has beamed ceilings and a cosy wood-burning stove. The large, secluded, lawned gardens include a children’s play area. Both properties enjoy shared use of a games room with pool table, table tennis and darts. With sea views, this is an enchanting holiday location with a private, 30-minute walk to a secluded pebble and sand beach and the spectacular South West Coastal Path (access only available from 2nd Feb - 31st Aug), where a chain of magnificent cliffs stretches along the Heritage Coast to Hartland Point. A pretty, 60-minute walk across fields leads to a little-known sandy beach (Porledge Beach), which is a wonderful sun trap and well off the tourist map, making it usually very quiet, even on the busiest summer day. The famous surfing beaches of Westward Ho! (4 miles) and Bude are an easy drive. Bikes can be hired to explore the nearby Tarka Trail and there is sailing, water skiing, golf and riding locally. Numerous NT properties in the area as well as the RHS gardens at Rosemoor and Docton Mill. Visit Hartland Abbey and the charming village of Clovelly (6 miles). The Atlantic Village Outlet Shopping Centre which includes a large supermarket is just 2 miles.

Thatched Cottage is a spacious detached six bedroom property for 12 guests and is suitable for a large family or a group of friends. It is a beautifully furnished converted restaurant set within the town of Kingsteignton, 2 miles from Newton Abbot and 1 mile from Newton Abbot racecourse. Spend some time unwinding in the open plan living and dining area on the ground floor which is light, airy and has plenty of room and home comforts for everyone to spread out. Perfect for a relaxing evening indoors when you’re not out exploring the delights of the local area. Next door, the kitchen is well equipped to prepare a family dinner. It is perfect for socialising whilst cooking a home-cooked meal. From the living room three steps lead down to a separate games room area which houses a pool table, a bar with stools, a gaming fruit machine (which is free to use with no prizes), a dart board, a 40” Smart TV with Freeview and Netflix. Upstairs are 6 bedrooms each with a Freeview Smart TV with Netflix. Kingsteignton has a choice of shops, pubs, a variety of eateries and sporting facilities, and the nearby towns and villages offer a variety of attractions. Nearby Newton Abbott can be reached from the doorstep along the walking and cycling path which takes you through the Hackney Marshes nature reserve. The ancient market town offers plenty of local shops, high street chains and supermarkets. There’s also a racecourse where National Hunt racing takes place from spring until autumn, with craft fairs during the winter.

There are a number of beaches within easy driving distance including Teignmouth, Torquay and Paignton, which also has a zoo. Spend a day on the beach building sand castles and walk the impressive Victorian Pier at Teignmouth. Enjoy the stunning beaches around Torquay and the many hidden coves such as Meadfoot, Oddicombe, and further afield, the pretty Ness Cove. And of course, the South West Coast Path provides stunning seascapes across the bay, with a popular stretch from Torquay Harbour to Daddyhole Plain.

The Dartmoor National Park is nearby with rugged and stunning scenery where you can enjoy walking, cycling, horse riding, climbing and canoeing. You can see the ponies, walk the Tors or simply stop off in one of the many villages for a Devon cream tea. For the children, there is Crealy Adventure Park or Go Ape in Haldon. There are many cycle ways off road, including Powderham Castle where there is a cycle track along the estuary. The Smithy glamping pods are fully equipped newly built lodges in the semi-rural area of Dainton, outside of Newton abbot. Situated on the owners smallholding and with beautiful countryside views. The owners are also happy to give guided tours where they are able.
As you enter the lodge through the French doors, you find yourself in the open kitchen/living/dining area. The kitchen is fully equipped with electric oven, electric hob and fridge/freezer. The living/dining area benefits from dining table and chairs, a sofa bed as additional sleeping and a TV. The bedroom contains a kingsize bed with wall mounted TV and en-suite shower room. The lodge has a lovely small decked and patio area to the front where guests can sit out and relax on the two zero-gravity garden chairs, looking out across the fields with various animals

The cottage is located on the open moor and it is a lovely place to walk and gaze at the surrounding countryside where the idyllic rural scenes of ‘War Horse’ were filmed. There is a 21-mile-long cycling and walking route, Drakes Trail, which runs through nearby Yelverton and links Tavistock and Plymouth sweeping through wooded valleys and open moorland.
