Visit the seaside town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea, just a short drive away and boasting the oldest water balanced, funicular cliff tramway in Great Britain alongside great restaurants and beaches.

The village of Loftus has good amenities, including three pubs, a Gin palace with micro-brewery, local grocery shops, bakery and an award winning bookshop stocking plenty of local authors and gifts. In the ‘Iron Valley’ of Skinningrove you’ll find secluded beaches and The Tom Leonard Mining Museum.

Enjoy the fishing port of Whitby, with its winding cobbled streets, famous abbey and wonderful fish and chips, or explore the spectacular coastline and dramatic North York Moors. The area surrounding this Yorkshire cottage offers a wealth of attractions including the steam railway at Grosmont, the pretty market towns of Pickering and Helmsley and stately homes and gardens such as Castle Howard. The spacious living area steeped in rustic charm is stunning to step into; with beams, a comfortable sofa and chairs, and an electric wood burner set in a traditional fireplace, making a warm cosy setting for relaxing in. A window seat set in the recess looks out across the front garden. Through from the living room is a traditional styled room with a table for board games, comfortable armchairs and a bookcase laden with books. Upstairs are two spacious and comfortable bedrooms, one has dual aspect views and the most fabulous feature wall decor, the second has an en-suite shower room. There are attractive gardens to the front and the rear, and the rear lawned garden is a perfect spot to sit and take in the surrounding countryside.
The nearby 3000-acre grounds of Broughton Hall Estate are at your disposal, wander down through the estate and admire the imposing stately home of Broughton Hall itself, or spot wildlife and birds as well as quaint bridges across the river. Within the estate are the Land Rover Experience offices from where experience days are offered (by direct arrangement with the owner) for an exhilarating drive along the land rover track and obstacles on the estate. The purpose built Wellbeing Centre, Avalon at Broughton Hall, is right on your doorstep and offers the perfect way to unwind, be present and connect.
The property sits beside the A59 giving easy access to the popular market town of Skipton where all amenities can be found, including a train station, leisure centre and canal boat trips. The area is peppered with gourmet pubs serving local produce as well as hearty, traditional pub food, and there are a wide variety of restaurants and bars in Skipton to choose from should you wish to treat yourself and dine out during your stay.
The Tour de France and the Tour de Yorkshire have both passed through Skipton and the surrounding countryside in recent years. Why not bring your bike and explore some of the routes for yourself? The quaint village of Grassington with its individual shops and tea rooms is not to be missed, or visit Bolton Abbey for a relaxing afternoon and woodland walks by the River Wharfe. This detached barn conversion is tucked away in a hidden valley within the Yorkshire Dales National Park, yet just 2 miles away from the bustling village of Grassington, which is well served with pubs, restaurants and individual country shops. The village also hosts the Grassington Festival, where well known stars perform, or near Christmas it holds the Dickensian Festival to really get people in a festive mood. Tom’s Barn has been lovingly restored and stands proudly on a hill, and the living room is upstairs to take advantage of the glorious views, both inside, with fantastic Cruck beams, and outside, over the hills to the moors above Hebden Gill.

This is a peaceful location ideal for getting away from the bustle of everyday life, with fantastic walks direct from the door, and for cyclists this is Tour De France country. The grounds lead on to ’fairyland’, a special area of oak and ash trees, bluebells and foxgloves, a beautiful wild and dramatic place.

For shopaholics, the famous spa town of Harrogate is a half an hour drive away. Here, you will find the normal high street shops and also high end fashion, or take time to have a traditional afternoon tea at Betty’s tea room. A little further afield lies the historic city of York with its Minster, museums and quaint cobbled streets. Shops and restaurant 3 miles, pub ½ mile.

Gable End is a traditional Yorkshire farm cottage, in a contemporary sort of way! Surrounded by the farm’s moor flock of Swaledale and Cheviot sheep, the property offers traditional and cosy features like comfy sofas, velvet cushions, a wood burner and exposed beams, along with extras such as broadband, USB plug sockets and a Smart Freesat TV. Owned by the Sherratt-Wordsworth family since the 1930s, the dwelling has been redesigned for its new life as a holiday cottage, removing a wall to make a light-filled, open and airy downstairs, and creating a new staircase for better access to the upper twin bedroom, with its skylight gazing up to the stars. The cottage has also been renovated from top to bottom with a blend of farmhouse and Georgian furniture and Victorian pictures. There are two lovely bedrooms – one with a kingsize bed, the other with either two 3 foot singles or a super kingsize bed – and a charming bathroom with both bath and shower. You will find Gable End a lovely, comfortable and cosy place to unwind and recharge your batteries.
Situated on the edge of the moors, it is also a fantastic place to walk or stroll from – two dogs are most welcome – or to go cycling in all the hills you could ask for! What’s more, being just a mile from Goathland and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, less than 10 miles from Whitby and Pickering, and just an hour from York, the cottage makes a perfect base to explore all the charms of this scenic and historic part of the country. The historic market town of Richmond is just a short drive with its Norman castle, Georgian theatre and quaint cobbled streets, surrounded by a good selection of tea rooms, gift shops and convenience stores. From here you can enjoy a riverside walk to Easby Abbey which lies in picturesque surroundings by the River Swale. Easby is one of the best preserved monasteries of the Premonstratensian ’White Canons’, with the magnificent refectory, gatehouse and canons’ dormitory remaining. The parish church within the precinct, which is still in use, contains rare 13th century wall paintings.

Travel just 7 miles to the west and you will arrive in the popular market town of Leyburn where a buzzing market lines the streets every Friday with stallholders selling a wide array of produce and wares. Leyburn is well served by a good range of traditional shops and amenities. The green rolling hills of Wensleydale lie to the west of Leyburn with many historic, inspiring landmarks. Just 2 miles from Leyburn is Middleham, famous for its castle that was home to Richard III, and has a wonderful racehorse presence. As well as the Dales, you are just a half hour drive away from the North York Moors National Park with attractions such as Sutton Bank, where you can take in the breathtaking views back across the national park or spend your day strolling around the market towns of Thirsk, Bedale and Northallerton. Surrounded by 10 acres of meadowland in the grounds of Ovington Grange, this charming detached cottage offers superb accommodation, and there is stabling and equestrian facilities for riders and carriage drivers by arrangement with the owner. This single-storey accommodation has level access throughout with wide doorways meaning it is easily accessible and will appeal to all ages. It has a spacious open-plan kitchen/dining room with gloss units and a full range of appliances, including a coffee machine, dishwasher and TV to cater for your every need. The living room is spacious with comfortable sofas set around an electric wood burner. Two patio doors open out onto the enclosed south-facing patio... a perfect spot to enjoy a morning coffee taking in the views beyond.

The accommodation extends to two large bedrooms. The first has a kingsize bed and quality bedding - promising a good night’s sleep! It also has an en-suite bathroom with corner shower. Bedroom two offers two single beds which can zip and link to make a super kingsize bed on request, as well as windows at both aspects of the room bringing in the surrounding views. Bedroom two has a TV for your entertainment. A separate bathroom is provided with bath with overhead electric shower.

To the side of the cottage is a lovely enclosed courtyard garden with furniture, ideal for al fresco dining with a glass of wine in the evening. There is the added benefit of a private driveway and space for two cars, with extended parking available on request. Being animal lovers, the owners, who live on-site, are happy to accept up to two well behaved dogs. There is also stabling available on site by private arrangement.

A short walk from the cottage, brings you to the charming hamlet of Ovington and a lovely traditional pub serving home-cooked food and local ales. With so many opportunities to explore whether by car or on foot, the stunning North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Yorkshire Dales National Park are both within easy reach. A short drive away is the market town of Barnard Castle with its bustling high street full of quaint shops, pubs and cafés, as well as the impressive Bowes Museum. Alternatively, the historic Yorkshire market town of Richmond is great for strolling along the cobbled streets and castle walls. This fantastic medieval city, with the minster standing proud in the centre, has something for all age groups. Nearby Dalby Forest is a tranquil haven to explore the miles of woodland trails on foot or by bike. There is also a zip wire trail for the more adventurous. The Yorkshire Coast is just a short drive away and the cottage is a great base for visiting the resorts of Scarborough, Filey and Whitby as well as the smaller villages of Robin Hood’s Bay, Staithes or the waterfall at the Hayburn Wyke cove. Just 3 miles away, Pickering is a traditional market town with a local market held every Monday which is very popular with both the locals and tourists alike. There are plenty of restaurants, pubs and cafés plus some interesting independent shops. Pickering is home to the North York Moors steam railway. Here you can catch a steam train for an amazing journey across the North York Moors National Park to the town of Whitby. Flamingo Land, a popular theme park, is close to Pickering with its exciting rides and fantastic zoo, sure to make a great day out with the children. Scarborough is on the east coast and is a very popular seaside town great for families with its large sweeping bays. There’s something for all age groups in Scarborough from the Sealife Centre, the theatres, the Alpamare waterpark and the historic Scarborough Castle. For 3 years running Duck cottage has been awarded our customers choice award and is aptly named Duck Cottage since as you are next to the village green with a large duck pond, Duck Cottage’s location is picture perfect, with trailing weeping willows along the bank and benches where you can enjoy the view whilst feeding the resident ducklings and their families. Duck Cottage was once a workshop for local woodworkers; it has been lovingly renovated to delight guests on arrival. The original beams are still retained harking back to its former days.

The property is bright and modern, with skylights bathing you in sunshine. On entering there is an entrance hallway leading you to the master double bedroom. Branching off the hallway is the shower room. Then further down the hallway it opens into the living area. This is a carefully laid out and tastefully furnished room, ensuring your comfort and providing a welcoming space to unwind in an evening. The well-equipped kitchen also has a breakfast bar. The kitchen leads to a twin bedroom, which can be made up as a double on request. Outside is a garden room with sofa and TV and for those chiller evenings a stove to keep you cosy. Attached to this is a private patio area with garden furniture so that you can dine outside in the summer months, as well as an enclosed garden beside the neighbouring owners’ home with a lawn perfect for exercising your pet dog.
Also being located between both the North York Moors National Park and the Yorkshire Dales you are in a great area for exploring. It is only 12 miles from the historical walled city of York, with medieval cobbled streets, Clifford’s Tower and many other attractions including the Jorvik Viking centre. The stately homes of Castle Howard, Newby Hall and Beningborough Hall are nearby, and Kirkham, Rievaulx and Fountain’s Abbey ruins are all worth a visit. Mother Shipton’s Cave at Knaresborough is a quirky day out, where you can see how the waterfall preserves objects by turning them to stone and hear tales of the ’witch’ who lived there. For younger visitors, Flamingo Land Theme Park and zoo is around a 45-minute drive away. There are also many outdoor activities to enjoy including golf, fishing at the nearby well stocked lakes, and zip lining through the treetops at Dalby Forest.
