Railway Cuttings is situated inside the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park. Its lack of light pollution makes it one of the best areas in Britain to enjoy the sky at night. Use binoculars to marvel at the Milky Way; enjoy the Northern Lights or perhaps you’ll be lucky and glimpse a spectacular meteor shower. For those who want to make the most of their ’Dark Sky’ stay, a visit to the Kielder Observatory is a must but book ahead to guarantee a time that suits you best. One of the big attractions of holidaying in this area of rural Northumberland is the range of activities so close at hand. Its close proximity to Kielder Water makes it a must-visit for walkers, sailors and cyclists. Nearby Leaplish has a swimming pool and spa open to visitors, and the on-site pub and restaurant is handy for those wishing to make a day of it. And for those who just want to enjoy the countryside, its south facing views overlook the North Tyne river and the nearby rolling hills. Old Kielder Castle Cottage lies in the prettiest part of the village of Kielder, directly opposite the castle, which can be admired from the large enclosed garden. Visitors to Kielder village and surrounding area are spoilt for choice, as the area is a paradise for mountain bikers, cyclists, walkers, fishermen and water enthusiasts. It is ideally located for stargazers and photographers, as this semi-detached holiday cottage is close to the Kielder Observatory. The castle houses a visitor centre, with a licensed café featuring a webcam to capture the ospreys and wildlife, and also holds varied exhibitions throughout the seasons.
The cottage has been sympathetically restored from a 1775 stable for the castle, into a contemporary cottage, which is ideal for couples or small families. Relax in the large bath after a day’s cycling or walking, or curl up on the comfy sofa and watch a film in front of the cosy wood burner. The rear area has a pretty tiered patio area for extra privacy to relax and unwind. The open beams, underfloor heated stone floors and wood burner all help to retain the character of the cottage.
Kielder is set in the Gold Tier International Dark Sky Park, the largest expanse of dark sky in Europe, perfect for astronomers. The surrounding parks all have something to offer visitors. There is a hop on/off ferry which takes you all around the water to admire the stunning scenery with a visitor centre, bird of prey centre and bar with picnic tables along the front.
The local pub and licensed café are only a short walk away, which means you can leave your car behind and enjoy a quiet drink with friends. This property is within a great location for exploring the abundance of visitor attractions in what is reputedly the friendliest and least inhabited county in England. Hadrian’s Wall and the Northumberland Heritage Coast (Alnwick Castle only 50 miles) make great days out and are easily drivable. The Kielder Winter Wonderland from mid-November to Christmas is a fantastic experience for families of all ages (must pre book). Wooler itself is just under 4 miles away and features a good range of shops, pubs, restaurants, and facilities. A 20-minute drive brings you to the popular village of Bamburgh a stunningly attractive small village set on the northern stretch of the Northumberland Coast. It is without doubt dominated by its magnificently striking castle that can be seen for miles around. Why not hit the waves yourself with a trip to the Farne Islands? Take a boat trip from Seahouses and see the Medieval Pele Tower and Victorian Lighthouse, as well as the famous seabird colony. Depending on the time of year, you might catch a glimpse of the friendly seals and puffins that visit the islands’ shores. Golfers flock to Bamburgh, where the Bamburgh Castle Golf Club offers a particularly picturesque round. It’s short but tough and boasts some of the best views in the country! Tucked away in a peaceful and secluded village setting, these five comfortably furnished holiday cottages are set in an idyllic location, only 5 miles from the spectacular Bamburgh Castle and one of the longest sandy beaches in England, and within a few minutes’ drive of Seahouses, where regular boat trips depart for the Farne Islands. Between the Cheviots and the sea, there is easy touring through the beautiful countryside with its numerous castles, stately homes and NT properties. Furnished to a high standard, and close to the owners’ home, Fordson offers single-storey accommodation and Ferguson is a detached two-storey cottage. The Mill House stands as a detached converted barn, with Waren View and The Granary Cottage forming an adjoining pair. This is an ideal choice for family holidays, with use of a very pleasant lawned area by a stream. There is also shared use of the owners’ hard tennis court nearby.

Warenford Village serves as an excellent base from which to discover Northumberland and the Scottish border country. Just 4 miles distant lies Budle Bay, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, as well as an SSSI, with the ancient walled town of Berwick-upon-Tweed (15 miles) and the Duchess of Northumberland’s ornamental gardens a short drive away. Created to rival the best in Europe, the gardens are contemporary in design and include waterfalls and cascading plumes set within landscaped grounds with themed planted areas. Also sure to delight both young and old alike is a visit to neighbouring Alnwick Castle, which served as the location for the Harry Potter films. Home of the Percy family, it stands as the second largest inhabited castle in England after Windsor Castle, with some of its rooms open to the public and displaying a wealth of decorative and fine art.

Within easy reach, too, is Holy Island – renowned for its medieval religious heritage, priory and picturesque castle – and also known by its Anglo-Saxon name of Lindisfarne. Accessed by a paved causeway at low tide, the island is popular with bird-watchers and nature lovers, with the north-western portion of the island being maintained as a nature reserve, where terns, plovers and seals can be observed. Whilst on the island, a trip to The Museum of Island Life will reveal former living and working conditions there, and St Aidan’s Winery tempts visitors with its sweet concoction of local Lindisfarne Mead.
There are quiet country lanes for cycling and several excellent golf courses nearby, as well as a selection of shops in Belford (3 miles) and good inns and restaurants in which to enjoy a family meal locally – the nearest pub with restaurant being just 30 yards.

Perfectly situated near to the banks of the River Derwent with a boat house and fishing permits available for a small fee, guests who enjoy river fishing will be spoilt for choice. Also just a few hundred yards from the Derwent Walkway as well as a variety of established public footpaths, walks and cycling routes, there is no better base for enjoying and exploring the local area. Then leading further out into County Durham, Northumberland, the Northumberland National Park and the stunning North Pennines. Only half a mile from the village of Ebchester, there are plenty of amenities and facilities right on the doorstep. A local village pub, excellent restaurants and a village shop are at the heart of this thriving community and within easy walking distance from the lodges. Golf lovers will be able to book a place on the famous Slaley Hall course just 15 miles away or the closer course at Consett which is just 3 miles away.
