Head into Chatton: a gorgeous country village nestled in the pretty Northumbrian Valley, bordered by the Cheviots. Keen walkers are sure to be impressed by St Cuthberts Way, a 100-kilometre long-distance trail between the Scottish Borders town of Melrose and Lindisfarne off the coast of Northumberland, named after a 7th-century saint. The nearby town of Wooler is set along the last leg of the journey, so you needn’t traverse the full length. Wooler itself is just under 4 miles away and features a good range of shops, pubs, restaurants, and facilities. A 20-minute drive brings you to the popular village of Bamburgh a stunningly attractive small village set on the northern stretch of the Northumberland Coast. It is without doubt dominated by its magnificently striking castle that can be seen for miles around. Why not hit the waves yourself with a trip to the Farne Islands? Take a boat trip from Seahouses and see the Medieval Pele Tower and Victorian Lighthouse, as well as the famous seabird colony. Depending on the time of year, you might catch a glimpse of the friendly seals and puffins that visit the islands’ shores. Golfers flock to Bamburgh, where the Bamburgh Castle Golf Club offers a particularly picturesque round. It’s short but tough and boasts some of the best views in the country! Tucked away in a peaceful and secluded village setting, these five comfortably furnished holiday cottages are set in an idyllic location, only 5 miles from the spectacular Bamburgh Castle and one of the longest sandy beaches in England, and within a few minutes’ drive of Seahouses, where regular boat trips depart for the Farne Islands. Between the Cheviots and the sea, there is easy touring through the beautiful countryside with its numerous castles, stately homes and NT properties. Furnished to a high standard, and close to the owners’ home, Fordson offers single-storey accommodation and Ferguson is a detached two-storey cottage. The Mill House stands as a detached converted barn, with Waren View and The Granary Cottage forming an adjoining pair. This is an ideal choice for family holidays, with use of a very pleasant lawned area by a stream. There is also shared use of the owners’ hard tennis court nearby.

Warenford Village serves as an excellent base from which to discover Northumberland and the Scottish border country. Just 4 miles distant lies Budle Bay, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, as well as an SSSI, with the ancient walled town of Berwick-upon-Tweed (15 miles) and the Duchess of Northumberland’s ornamental gardens a short drive away. Created to rival the best in Europe, the gardens are contemporary in design and include waterfalls and cascading plumes set within landscaped grounds with themed planted areas. Also sure to delight both young and old alike is a visit to neighbouring Alnwick Castle, which served as the location for the Harry Potter films. Home of the Percy family, it stands as the second largest inhabited castle in England after Windsor Castle, with some of its rooms open to the public and displaying a wealth of decorative and fine art.

Within easy reach, too, is Holy Island – renowned for its medieval religious heritage, priory and picturesque castle – and also known by its Anglo-Saxon name of Lindisfarne. Accessed by a paved causeway at low tide, the island is popular with bird-watchers and nature lovers, with the north-western portion of the island being maintained as a nature reserve, where terns, plovers and seals can be observed. Whilst on the island, a trip to The Museum of Island Life will reveal former living and working conditions there, and St Aidan’s Winery tempts visitors with its sweet concoction of local Lindisfarne Mead.
There are quiet country lanes for cycling and several excellent golf courses nearby, as well as a selection of shops in Belford (3 miles) and good inns and restaurants in which to enjoy a family meal locally – the nearest pub with restaurant being just 30 yards.

Old Brewery Cottage is a Grade II listed semi-detached barn conversion which was originally built in the 1800s. It now offers tastefully furnished accommodation, adjacent to the owner’s home, ideal for exploring Hadrian’s Wall Country.
With a picturesque Tyne Valley view, this welcoming holiday cottage is situated only a few miles from Hexham, and is ideal for exploring the Northumberland coast and the National Park. The historic market town of Hexham, dominated by its majestic abbey, offers an abundance of amenities only 12 miles east or travel an extra 20 minutes to sample the vibrant city of Newcastle or try a little retail therapy at the world renowned Metro Centre. Nearby Seahouses, famous for its lovely fish and chips, is a bustling harbour town unchanged for years. Take a boat trip from here to the Farne Islands to see the migrating birds or seals. No trip to Northumberland is complete without heading over to Holy Island, reached by a causeway at low tide. You will find golf courses, hills and valleys for strolling, rambling, cycling or driving. Nestled away in Northumberland along a country lane and with views across open fields, Vindomora Country Lodges are an ideal place to enjoy a super holiday. Coria Lodge (ref UKC4416) has been adapted to accomodate wheelchair users, with disabled parking, extra wide ramp access, widened doorways, raised electrical sockets and hoist facilities. The low level entry bathroom has a large shower with bi-folding doors allowing wheelchair access, a grab rail and raised toilet. Each detached lodge also offers a private, 6-seater hot tub (Coria Lodge, ref UKC4416, has a hoist rail system installed) and garden area with garden furniture for sitting out and enjoying the location. These properties are for families and couple bookings only, bookings for party purposes such as stag or hen parties are not accepted.
Perfectly situated near to the banks of the River Derwent with a boat house and fishing permits available for a small fee, guests who enjoy river fishing will be spoilt for choice. Also just a few hundred yards from the Derwent Walkway as well as a variety of established public footpaths, walks and cycling routes, there is no better base for enjoying and exploring the local area. Then leading further out into County Durham, Northumberland, the Northumberland National Park and the stunning North Pennines. Only half a mile from the village of Ebchester, there are plenty of amenities and facilities right on the doorstep. A local village pub, excellent restaurants and a village shop are at the heart of this thriving community and within easy walking distance from the lodges. Golf lovers will be able to book a place on the famous Slaley Hall course just 15 miles away or the closer course at Consett which is just 3 miles away. The cathedral city of Durham, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is only 15 miles away and well worth a visit.
Officially located in Northumberland yet also on the border of County Durham, there are plenty of places to visit and explore within an easy radius. Steeped in history, the county of Northumberland is home to the historic Hadrian’s Wall which spans 73 miles from coast to coast and is now recognised as a World Heritage Site. The market town of Hexham is a 15 mile drive away and offers plenty of facilities and amenities including a leisure centre, bowling alley, supermarkets, shops and a farmers market, as well as the historic attractions including Hexham Abbey and Hexham Old Gaol. The pretty town of Corbridge lies just 10 miles away and boasts a cobbled street centre surrounded by quaint tea shops, cafés and boutiques. Beach 24 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant ½ mile.

Number 29 is a perfect base for exploring this exceptionally pretty area of Northumberland. Sleeping up to four people on one level, this comfortable ground floor apartment is ideal for a couple or a small family, walkers are particularly attracted to this area with walks from the door into the gorgeous countryside. The owners have added nice little touches, such as Out of Eden toiletries in the bathroom, and cleaning products in the kitchen. The dining area has a table with four chairs, whilst the bedroom area has plenty of storage with two double wardrobes.
It is said that "Postman Pats’s Greendale" is based on Wooler, being the gateway to the Cheviots. With a lovely sitting area to admire the view, the garden is an ideal place to relax and enjoy some down time. Wooler is on the edge of the National Park and is only 15 miles to Berwick on Tweed, with a beautiful beach and plenty of shops and history. All of the Scottish Borders are easily explored from here, with Coldstream only 14 miles and Kelso a little further. Edinburgh is only 90 minutes away.

Northumberland is such a diverse and friendly county with the beautiful Heritage Coast only 15 miles away to Bamburgh where you can follow the trail and take in the history making a lovely day trip. Holy Island Causeway is only 14 miles where the Lindisfarne Gospels were kept (check the tides). The location really is ideal for exploring in all directions of Northumberland and Scotland’s Border counties. Wooler itself has that country feeling while still having a market town buzz, combining home comforts with countryside. You can be hiking the Cheviot Hills in the morning and having a local beer on an evening. St Cuthbert’s Way walk passes via Wooler, a 62-mile route follows the ancient pilgrimage route, followed by St Cuthbert and many other monks between Melrose Abbey in the Scottish Borders and the Holy Island of Lindisfarne in north Northumberland. Felton is in an ideal location, not too far from the A1, making venturing out very easy in all directions. Head over to the stunning Northumberland Heritage Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with miles of golden beaches, peppered with historic castles, or head west over to Hadrian’s Wall area where you can spend time walking some of the ancient wall. Or perhaps stop off at one of the Roman Forts. Felton is only a few minutes from Alnwick, home still to the Duke of Northumberland who resides in part of the majestic castle. Some scenes from Harry Potter and Downton Abbey were filmed within the castle walls. Discover the cobbled streets, with a great choice of pubs and cafes. Northumberland is reputedly the friendliest county in England where you can be assured of a really warm welcome.
