The moment you approach this beautifully converted chapel you know you’re in store for a lovely stay in a unique property. The large wooden chapel doors open to reveal a big hallway with a couple of rooms leading off to the sides. You come to a useful study room first which offers a little privacy or peace, and the opposite is a utility room providing the perfect place to dry and feed the dog, dry wet coats after a busy day’s walking in the Lakes. A second set of doors opens into an impressive, Instagram-worthy living space, with high vaulted ceilings, large leaded windows, and oak beams.
Once you catch your breath, you can take in the large kitchen with all the amenities and space required to cater anything from a simple sandwich to a family feast. The breakfast bar is the ideal place to watch the chef show off their skills whilst enjoying a glass of wine before moving the feast to the large dining table, where you could easily imagine you were starring in an epic movie during a medieval banquet.

You can’t fail to notice the first of the bedrooms as your eyes are drawn to the glass-fronted stairs leading up to the kingsize bedroom in the rafters of the chapel, where there is also an en-suite bathroom to the left. The remaining three bedrooms consist of two more king-size beds and a twin room, all with en-suite bathrooms and located on the lower floor level.
The chapel is in the quiet Hamlet of Lowick Green near Spark Bridge but offers a great location to explore the scenery and attractions of the South Lakes area. There is a local pub The Farmers Arms. The iconic Coniston Water is just 10 miles away, offering a great location for wild swimming, paddleboarding or kayaking for those water enthusiasts. Alternatively, within a short drive, you can enjoy the world-famous Windermere water offering Lakeside towns to explore with an excellent range of independent shops, restaurants, pubs, or attractions like The World of Beatrix Potter. Take a lake cruise or hire your motorboat to enjoy this vast expanse of water. Other local attractions include the Motor Museum, Lakes Aquarium, escape rooms, high ropes, and outdoor adventures, right through to horse racing or Michelin star restaurants. The nearby village of Warkworth, whose skyline is dominated by it’s ancient castle, is a short drive away and has an interesting variety of galleries, shops, authentic pubs, restaurants and cafés, including a French patisserie, and is centrally placed for discovering all of the beaches, islands, castles, historic houses, towns and villages in historic Northumbria. Straight opposite the property is Slate Hall Riding Centre, take advantage of a stroll along the golden sands with one of the horses or ponies on offer - what a wonderful way to end a holiday to remember at Bernicia House! Seahouses offers a wide array of tearooms, restaurants, pubs and shops within walking distance. Boat trips run from the nearby harbour to the Farne Islands, famous for their nesting seabirds and grey seal colonies.
The picture postcard village of Bamburgh, dominated by its majestic castle, is only 2 miles north, where there is a wide expanse of golden, and often empty sandy beaches. The tidal island of Lindisfarne, locally known as Holy Island, can be seen from the beach and is accessible via a causeway twice daily. A further 2 miles up the coastline brings you to Waren Mill, which is steeped in history. Once an important port, its harbour has long since disappeared, silted up beneath the sands of the estuary. Budle Bay is a bird sanctuary and at low tide a vast expanse of mud flats is home to thousands of sea and land birds, making this location a haven for bird watchers. The historic market town of Alnwick, with its own castle, offers many facilities, just a short drive inland. Alnwick Garden is a popular visitor attraction with its grand cascade waterfall and a restaurant within the largest treehouse in Europe! Beach 800 yards. Shop, pub and restaurant 300 yards.

The Burrow has been beautifully restored to a good standard making your stay comfortable. It was once a thriving gunpowder works dating back to 1798 and part of Low Wood Mill gunpowder works. With the multi-fuel burner in the living area and the underfloor heating, you can be toasty warm on those cold winter evenings and in the summer you can sit out on the patio and enjoy views and access to the paddock. Murton Whitehouse Steading is a U-shaped steading, sympathetically converted into six cottages, all with private gardens and grouped around a central courtyard. An ideal getaway for a family or a small group, this cottage at Murton Whitehouse Steading will comfortably sleep up to six people. On the ground floor of this charming house, you’ll enjoy preparing meals and snacks in the kitchen/dining room, utilising the door out to the garden while the kids play, and whoever isn’t cooking can enjoy a glass of wine in the sunshine. If it’s not as sunny and warm; the view is equally as nice. Two of the bedrooms are downstairs, including the largest of the three, which has an en-suite shower room. Also on the ground floor is a very useful shower room, accessed from the spacious hallway. The remaining bedroom on the grounds floor is a twin room. Upstairs, the main living room shared the floor with the third bedroom. The main bathroom completes this floor.

Within 100 yards of the property is a riding school and there are various walks available through the beautify countryside from the steading. The historic town of Berwick-upon-Tweed is approximately 3 miles away, with the Elizabethan town walls, well worth strolling arounds. Berwick has a thriving compliment of restaurant and pubs – you may be surprised to learn that ‘Lowry’ painted many pictures of the area. This park of Northumberland is famed for the spectacular coastline beached with views of the turbulent past within close proximity. Unmissable places to visit include Holy Island of Lindisfarne, Bamburgh Castle and Chillingham Castle. Edinburgh is 60 miles away, as is Newcastle. The Cheviot Hills are close by with numerous walking routes, whilst the Scottish Border is within 5 miles and the pretty coastal village of Eyemouth is less than a 20-minute drive. If you are lucky, you might be able to see the dolphins in the harbour.

The cottage features two spacious sitting room’s; both rooms bright and airy with lovely countryside views, with the first sitting room offers an open fire. The farm style kitchen is a fabulous space and is well-equipped to support you with your every culinary requirement. Within the kitchen there is a large central dining table which makes the kitchen the perfect spot for them more social evenings with friends and family. French doors lead you out into the beautifully landscaped back garden. To the back of the property, you will find a large conservatory boasting spectacular views! There is also a handy downstairs shower room occupying the ground floor.
Head up to the first floor and find four large bedrooms: a super king with en-suite, a double with en-suite, a family room with one double and two singles and a single room. The stylish family bathroom completes the upstairs layout with a jacuzzi bath or shower. The lawn is ideal for adult relaxation or play time with your furry friends and is enclosed by a stone wall, beyond which lies miles of beautiful countryside with cattle and sheep grazing happily. There are also plenty of seating areas externally which can be enjoyed around the water feature. Watch the sun set from the warmth of the hot tub, the perfect way to unwind after a memorable day.
Ancroft is a very small rural village, it sits just 5 miles from the popular Berwick Upon Tweed, take a stroll to one of four beautiful beaches, offering water sporting opportunities, breath-taking scenery, and plenty of family excitement, you’ll truly be spoilt for choice. Enjoy a relaxing game of golf, or enrich yourself with the history of Berwick Castle, involved in many Anglo-Saxon wars, there’s plenty to uncover. Take a scenic stroll along the River Tweed before enjoying a spot of lunch in one of the many eateries on offer or take a trip to nearby Duns to discover its award-winning butcher and delicatessen, alongside being an exciting hub for racing enthusiasts with its Jim Clark Museum and the Jim Clark Rally. Also, in easy reach of Bamburgh, a stunningly attractive small village set on the Northern stretch of the Northumberland Coast. It is without doubt dominated by its magnificently striking castle that can be seen for miles around, giving the whole village a somewhat dramatic feeling. You can’t fail to be impressed by the sheer scale of the castle once you are up close and in the village itself. There is much to do in the village alongside the castle and its amazing history, there are impressive stretches of pure golden sandy beaches, many English tea rooms and restaurants, and a newly renovated museum dedicated to Grace Darling.
