Otterburn sits on the edge of the National Park in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is approximately 20 minutes from Kielder Water, and only a few miles from Hadrian’s Wall, as well as being very close to the local wedding venues Le Petit Chateau and Otterburn Hall. The village, once the site of the famous 1388 victory of the Scots over the English, nestles close to the banks of the River Rede between the hills and the moors overlooking the North Tyne Valley. With pretty walks and cycle routes from the door, as well as local fishing, horse riding, golf and a friendly village shop/tea room; this is a superb location for a relaxing holiday any time of the year. The village was once the home of a busy weaving industry and houses Otterburn Mill, marking the village’s historic past and a great tourist stop off for afternoon tea. Across from the small public footpath that runs along the front of the cottages, an ideal area for relaxing after a days exploring. The location has easy access to the Northumberland coast with miles of unspoilt and uncrowded golden beaches and an outstanding coastline peppered with castles and friendly locals. The famous Alnwick Castle was used in the filming of Harry Potter and is only 26 miles away. The island, a fine walking and bird watching destination, is dominated by 16th century Lindisfarne Castle, standing dramatically on a rocky outcrop – the ruins of Lindisfarne Priory, the 7th century seat of Christian learning and where the Lindisfarne Gospels were created.

The road from the island was opened in 1954 by Queen Elizabeth II and on the mainland are Northumberland’s many delights within easy driving distance; Bamburgh Castle, Seahouses for boat trips to the Farne Islands’ bird and seal colonies, and Alnwick Castle and Gardens.

Practically on the doorstep of your cottage you have the coast with its long, silver beaches complemented by striking castles. Craster is a picturesque fishing village with the most delicious kippers and the walk to Dunstanburgh Castle is a short drive away, as are Alnmouth and Alnwick, with Europe’s largest water garden and the magnificent 11th-century castle. Seahouses, a bustling harbour seaside resort, is only 10 minutes and a great place to start with fishing trips and ferries to the Farne Islands to see the bird and seal colonies, organised by a number of companies. The coastline is peppered with small fishing villages, and inland you have the hills and forests. Both sea and river fishing are in abundance in Northumerland. You can also fish at Alnmouth beach without a licence or head up along the River Aln for salmon fishing. There are numerous lake fisheries too - the primary ones being at Caiston, Fontburn and Felton Frence, all providing tuition and equipment hire. Glendale Cottage (ref W43490) and Glendale Mews (ref W43489) are the ideal spot for a relaxing and peaceful holiday in beautiful natural surroundings. There is an indoor, heated swimming pool which guests can hire for private use (at cost), and also the use of over 11 acres of natural woodland and grounds that form part of this beautiful location. The owners live on-site in the original period farmhouse, accessed via a driveway lined with rhododendrons through a small dense wood. There is a small wooded picnic and play area with a log cabin function room and a large charcoal BBQ, as well as another wooded area accommodating hens and a natural pond. There is access to a public footpath from the properties.
Located on the southern edge of the Northumberland National Park and inside the International Dark Skies Park, Glendale is easily found on the B6318 just north of Haltwhistle.

Or enjoy a round of golf on the links golf course and admire the spectacular views across the sweeping coastline, north to Bamburgh, south to Beadnell and out to sea towards the Farne Islands on the horizon. There are several shops, tea rooms, pubs and restaurants within this friendly village, and horse riding can be arranged on its outskirts. Only a couple of miles north of Farne Cottage is the picture postcard village of Bamburgh, protected by its dramatic fortress, which commands the power and presence of the seasoned film set it regularly becomes, and where the Grace Darling Museum is worth a visit.
The wide expanse of golden and often empty sandy beaches this region is renowned for, is perfect for a romantic stroll to feel the sand between your toes and watch the waves lap against the shoreline. The tidal island of Lindisfarne, locally known as Holy Island and the birthplace of Christianity, can be viewed from here too. A little further north is the bird sanctuary at Budle Bay, and at low tide a vast expanse of mud flats is the home to countless thousands of sea and land birds making this location a haven for bird watchers. The sweep of golden sands at Beadnell Bay is popular with water sport enthusiasts, only two miles to the south. The elegant Georgian town of Berwick, which straddles the salmon-rich river Tweed, is 17 miles north and the historic market town of Alnwick, 12 miles inland, with its own magnificent castle, offers many facilities. Alnwick Garden is a popular visitor attraction with its grand cascading waterfall, and restaurant set within the largest tree house in Europe. Farne Cottage is an excellent choice for those seeking a stylish coastal retreat within the popular holiday destination of Seahouses and makes an excellent base to explore the twenty miles of Heritage coastline designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
