    The town’s colourful history is one of the many draws to Whitby. So little of the old town has changed over hundreds of years. There are still ships being built where Captain Cook’s vessel the Endeavour was handmade back in 1764 ready for the first voyage to Australia, you can now sail across the harbour in a replica or have your dinner in a restaurant on the ship in the harbour. You can explore the winding streets that Dracula used to roam according to Bram Stoker’s famous book, which has inspired movies and TV shows as well as the annual Goth events.
    The town is very proud of its seafaring heritage; enjoy smoked kippers, fresh crab or award winning fish and chips. Further along the coast there are some picturesque bays, villages and towns to visit, including Robin Hoods Bay, Staithes, Runswick Bay, Scarborough and Saltburn. All perfect for a memorable day out.     If you want to get off the beaten track there are many coves and bays dotted along the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Heritage Coast to explore. Hidden gems such as Runswick Bay and Boggle Hole along with the more famous such as Robin Hood’s Bay and Staithes are worth a visit. There are many local walks in the area including the Cleveland Way route, and the Cinder Track across the viaduct which heads down to Robin Hood’s Bay.

    Head inland into the North York Moors National Park for stunning scenery and fabulous views. Local bus, car, bike or even a journey on a traditional steam train are other ways to get out and see what the area has to offer. The Victorian seaside town of Scarborough is just down the coast with its two huge bays; North Bay for a quiet stroll watching the waves, or South Bay for amusement arcades, a fairground and a harbour. The Open Air Theatre plays host to many international artists throughout the summer months, and Peasholm Park hosts its Model Naval War on a regular basis. There are a number of golf courses, cycling tracks and country or beach walks in the local area. If history is your thing, there are many abbeys and historic places of interest throughout North Yorkshire including the Eden War Museum in Malton. There are also boat trips for birdwatching, fishing and whale watching available. An ’Illusion Trail’ guides visitors around the network of backstreets and alleyways. The best views of the town can be enjoyed from the Cleveland Way which runs down the cliff to the seashore.
