A wider range of amenities can be found in the nearby historic city of Lancaster, 8 miles away; here you can visit Lancaster Castle, museums or even the Butterfly House at Williamson Park. Windermere, Kendal and the South Lakes are just a 40-minute drive.     The mountain bike trails of Lee and Cragg Quarry can be picked up just outside Bacup, and the surrounding countryside including the nearby Rossendale Valley is popular with walkers and hikers. Other local attractions include The Whitaker Art Gallery, the ’Singing Ringing Tree’ and the ’Halo’, Burnley and Rossendale’s panopticons, and the National Trust’s Gawthorpe Hall. Finally, the city of Manchester is around a 40-minute drive or a 30-minute direct train from Walsden or Todmorden train stations.
