On-site is a small children’s play area. A 10-minute walk across the fields brings you into Sedlescombe with its village green and traditional country pub. In close proximity to Battle, with its famous battlefield and abbey, built to commemorate the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Relive one of the most famous days in history, and join the 1066 walk from the doorstep. Take a trip on the Kent and East Sussex Steam Railway from Tenterden, also known as ’The Jewel of the Weald’, through the Rother Levels to Bodiam, one of the most evocative moated castles (National Trust), built in 1385. Discover the one time coastal smuggling town of Hastings and medieval Cinque Port town of Rye with its cobbled streets. Picturesque sand dunes and interesting wildlife can be explored at Camber. Follow in the footsteps of Elizabeth I and spend some time exploring the beautiful Cinque port market town of Rye. In 1573 she bestowed the title Rye Royale. Stay in this well thought out and stylish holiday cottage which is just a 6 minute walk from the centre of the town, with its large selection of pubs, restaurants and cafes. You could discover for yourself why many authors, musicians, artists and celebrities have chosen to settle here. Rye is one of the best preserved medieval towns in England, despite being the haunt of the notorious smugglers, The Hawkhurst Gang. Visit The Mermaid Inn, their famous hideout, where the cellars date back to 1156. Visit the Rye Museum and climb St Mary’s Tower for breathtaking views across to Rye Harbour Nature Reserve and Winchelsea. See Lamb House, the home of Henry James and later E. F. Benson, and where they filmed the recent production of ’Mapp and Lucia’. Another great film location is Camber Sands and going in the other direction towards Hastings where ’Foyles War’ was filmed. Rye Harbour Nature Reserve is just 1 mile away and hosts a large range of wildlife in numerous different habitats. Shingle, saltmarsh, freshwater gravel pits and saline lagoons are only a few of the natural habitats that can be found when discovering the coastline. Alternatively you can delve into the rich military history which is attached to the area.
Newhope is also very close to Camber Castle, formerly known as Winchelsea Castle, which was built by Henry VIII to protect the Sussex Coast against French invaders in the 16th century. This terraced seaside cottage dates back to 1850, and boasts a beautiful interior, in the style of the Arts and Crafts movement typical of the time, which was inspired and led by William Morris in the late 19th-century. The well-equipped kitchen/dining room is bespoke and is made up of oak units. The lovely living room boasts a large smart TV and a warming electric wood burner.
The property is situated in the village of St Leonards-on-Sea, close to the fishing town of Hastings, which enjoys 3 miles of award-winning shingle beach, and plenty of footpaths for walking and cycling. The coastal cycle path which runs from Hastings to Bexhill On Sea is just 400 yards from the property. There is a plethora of independent shops, a cinema, cafés, pubs and restaurants within walking distance as well as a train station with direct trains to London Charing Cross. The medieval town of Hastings with its historic beach backed by grand whitewashed Edwardian buildings and fine Victorian pier (awarded ’Pier of the Year’ in 2017) is just a mile away. Here you can also visit a number of independent galleries including Hastings Contemporary which is situated right by the beach. For children, and those young at heart, the worlds largest underground skate park is located beneath the seafront promenade in Hastings. ’The Source’ includes a mixture of transition and street features and has open sessions, coaching and even film screenings at certain times of the year. At Bexhill On Sea, 6 miles you can visit ’De La Warr Pavilion’, or ’the people’s pavilion’, a pioneering centre for arts and culture with many different exhibitions throughout the year. The market town of Battle offers delightful tea rooms, or walk across the iconic battlefield, where you can learn about the history that took place there. Situated in the coastal town of Seaford, where you will find fish and chips, restaurants, bars, cafés, and a shopping area. Eastbourne Miniature Steam Railway Adventure Park is less than 15 miles away and the nearest airport is London Gatwick Airport. Brighton Pier is less than 15 miles, taking 30 minutes by car along the A259. Eastbourne Pier is just over ten miles away and takes approximately 25 minutes by car along the A259. There is a good bus route to both Brighton and Eastbourne. Seven Sisters national park is less than 10 miles away and there is a bus that takes you there. Great place for walking, cycling, wildlife spotting, kayaking and paddle boarding.
Drussillas Zoo park is within a 10-minute drive.
Cuckmere Valley has views of the Seven Sisters and has a flower-rich chalk grasslands, a haven for flowers and wildlife. A great spot for artists, bird watchers and photographers. Glyndebourne Opera House is only thirty minutes away where you can see some of the world’s best opera singers and operas. If you want to stay closer to home, Seaford seafront is 0.2 miles away and has free parking and in walking distance of the Seaford town. Beach 1 mile. Pub less than a mile. Local shops less than a mile.

You could take a ramble across the South Downs and stop off at an inn and unwind before heading back. The area is steeped in history with a Norman castle, historic houses and the Glyndebourne opera house a short drive away. Climb to the top of Lewes castle for panoramic views across Sussex and after a picnic in the gardens visit the museum of Sussex Archaeology. Alternatively, have a browse around Lewes town where you will find lots of restaurants, independent boutiques, art galleries, pubs, and antique shops. Beach 9½ miles.

Nestled in the rural downland village of Jevington with the South Downs Way passing on your doorstep, and the coast just a couple of miles away, this cottage has everything you need for a wonderful break. Brooke’s Cottage has an enviable position within the South Downs National Park with gorgeous views over the countryside.
The cottage has an open plan living area with double aspect views of the rolling hills, woodland, and garden. There is a leather sofa to relax on in the evenings and there is also a fitted kitchen area. The double bedroom is light and airy with lovely views and has compact en-suite facilities. The main entrance patio doors lead from the living area with steps down to the cottage’s private enclosed garden which has comfortable outside furniture to sit and enjoy the view. Herstmonceux Castle is a short drive away and offers 300 acres of woodland formal gardens and of course the 15th-century moated castle. The building at the time was the largest private home in England and since it adopted the French fashion of building in brick, the castle of Herstmonceux was unique. It is well worth a visit to learn a little about the history of the castle and relax before taking a gentle stroll around the formal gardens. Other attractions close by for your enjoyment include Glyndbourne with internationally renowned concerts and plays performed throughout the year, and Firle Place which is an outstanding privately owned country house in Sussex that dates from the time of Henry VIII. The house gardens and notable collection of works of art and porcelain are of national importance and will ensure a day to remember. This inviting holiday cottage with a pretty garden at the end of a cobbled twitten is close to the famous Mermaid Inn in the quaint streets of Rye. You enter this charming cottage straight into the living/dining room, with a lovely large window overlooking the pretty front garden. With a patio and lawn, this is a balmy sunny spot for the summer months. A Smart TV complete with Netflix account provided and an Amazon Echo speaker allow you to enjoy your holiday with all the mod cons. In winter with the open fire lit, the cottage is warm and welcoming. The well-equipped kitchen has a small table for two for a quiet morning cup of tea before the rest of the house wakes. On the first floor, the master bedroom to the front of the property offers a double bed overlooking the garden. The famous Mermaid Inn can be glimpsed from the window too. In bedroom two, the Laura Ashley wallpaper and pretty floral bed throw provide a comfy bedtime retreat. From the kitchen you have a door leading to the small courtyard with table and chairs for enjoying balmy summer evenings.

Step out of your front door and you have a pretty tea room at the end of the row of terraces, handy if you don’t fancy cooking breakfast or for sampling their cake offerings after a day out exploring. You are perfectly situated for the local deli, banks, greengrocers, restaurants, pubs and everything else you would expect from a bustling high street. A gentle stroll and you can visit the Heritage Centre, where you can watch the town model’s ’Sound and Light’ show which goes into detail about the history and the colourful past of Rye and its inhabitants. Just a 10-minute drive away is the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve where you can walk along the sea wall and out on to the marshes to enjoy flora and fauna. You can choose to walk out to Camber Castle, originally located on a shingle spit and where once it protected the towns of Rye and Winchelsea before the sea receded. Although no longer open to visitors it is still a striking landmark worth a visit.

The award-winning beach of Camber Sands is just a short drive away and has miles of sandy beach and dunes to explore. Visit the rock pools at low tide on the pebbly beach at Pett Level, just a 10-minute drive from Rye. The towns of Hastings and Ashford are around a 30-minute drive away and here you can get mainline trains to London if you wish to explore the capital for a day. The towns of Tenterden and Canterbury are all within easy reach by car and are well worth a visit. If you would like to take a day trip to the continent, the Eurostar can be picked up from Ashford International station and trains to Paris, Lille and Bruges are available. Alternatively, the ferries run from Dover just 45 minutes away or the Channel Tunnel from Folkestone, a 45-minute drive.
