    Less than 2 miles from Bodmin. This area is a great place to explore by bicycle and you can either bring your own or hire them locally and roam along the nearby Camel Trail. Barn Cottage is an ideal base for touring the whole of Cornwall with a host of nearby sandy beaches such as Polzeath, Harlyn and Trevone. Classic Cornish villages such as Fowey, Mevagissey, Port Isaac and Boscastle are all within easy reach, as is the bustling fishing town of Looe.     The oldest part of Bodmin is made up of mainly granite buildings clustered around the Bodmin Beacon. The Beacon is a 144 feet tall obelisk in memory of Sir Walter Raleigh Gilbert. The area around the Beacon which has woodland and traditional hay meadow was declared a Local Nature Reserve in 1994. The 18-mile Camel Trail follows the route of the old railway along traffic free paths, providing a flat cycle through Bodmin and Wadebridge out to Padstow, eminently suitable for families.     Portreath offers the pleasures of the sea and countryside with beautiful views, spectacular cliffs and walking trails. Illogan Woods is adjacent to Portreath with lovely streams and a circular walk leading to the 14th-century church tower of Illogan. There is also Tehidy Country Park just outside of Portreath with its adjoining golf course. It is a beautiful country park comprised of 250 acres of woodland, lakes, bridleways, cycling and nature trails. There is a picturesque lake with swans and various kinds of waterfowl.
    Porthtowan has one of Cornwall’s finest surfing waves. Producing good waves at all states of the tide. It is not for the faint-hearted, and beginners should be careful. An excellent surf school operates from the beach. At low tide, the beach stretches down to St Agnes Head and Chapel Porth Beach. Beach ¼ miles.

But the main attraction is obviously the majestic St Michael’s Mount with its tidal causeway, which can be glimpsed from the patio doors on a clear day.
    Nearby Penzance, meaning ’holy headland’, is the last major town before Lands End. The streets of Penzance hold many historic buildings dating from the 17th century; it is well worth a walk around. The pub on Chapel Street, reputed to date from 1233, is the older pub in the town, steeped in smuggling and pirate history. A few minutes down the road is Newlyn, home to one of the largest fishing fleets with over 40 acres of the harbour and, more recently, attracting many great artists and exhibitions. In addition, Lands End, St Ives and the Lizard Peninsula are all within easy reach and ensure you can be as active or lazy as you like. Beach 2½ miles.
