At the end of a winding country lane and close to the rocky shoreline, it is set in a cluster of properties and is surrounded by six acres of fascinating gardens and trees. Within walking distance is the Menai Strait and just a few minutes’ drive away is Llanddona with its 5-mile sandy beach. Take a stroll along the beach to Beaumaris with its 13th-century castle and Victorian pier. Lying at the very heart of an officially designated AONB, there are golden sands everywhere and many outdoor recreational pursuits, including golf, riding, shooting, fishing, sailing, surfing, cycling and motor sports. Situated just 5 minutes from Cardigan Bay and within easy reach to the whole of the beautiful Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire coastline and coastal walks, The Stables is a detached, converted stone holiday cottage peacefully set on a farm with a selection of alpacas, donkeys, goats, ducks and chickens. The owners who live on the farm, which is set in 48 acres of rolling countryside, encourage the children to interact with the animals, and are also pleased to offer the use of a barbecue hut nicknamed the ‘Hobbit House’ by the family. Guests can hire it during their stay directly with the owners, subject to availability and for a small charge. There is bike storage in the barn if you would like to bring your own bikes.
Within a 15-minute drive visitors can discover quaint New Quay, famous for the bottlenose dolphins that can often be seen from the harbour (boat trips available in season). The colourful, Georgian, harbour town of Aberaeron is just a bit further up the coast road, with its chic shops and plenty of restaurants. Antique shoppers and browsers will enjoy the nearby market town of Newcastle Emlyn, and Cenarth with its waterfalls is also close by and offers indoor swimming, coracle rides, fishing and paintballing. There are numerous attractions in the area, particularly suitable for children.
Nearby is the Cardigan Island Coastal Farm Park, which is set on a headland overlooking the nature reserve of Cardigan Island, home to thousands of sea birds. At the foot of the cliffs, a colony of Atlantic grey seals can be observed in their natural habitat. Spectacular coastline and wonderful views can be savoured from the National Trust managed Penbryn Bay and a visit to National Trust Cilgerran Castle can also be enjoyed. Only the ruins remain of this striking 13th-century castle, whose vantage point overlooks the wonderful Teifi Gorge. Also nearby is the town of Cardigan with its restored medieval castle. The name, the Plucking Barn originates from the days of old when the barn was used to prepare ducks and chickens. Today there is no trace of that, but instead you will be greeted by friendly owners who have created a modern and very comfortable holiday cottage, in an ‘upside down’ style to take advantage of the gorgeous views. On the ground floor there are two bedrooms, one a double and the other a twin. They both have access to the lovely shower room with walk-in shower. There is thermostatically controlled radiators upstairs, and underfloor heating on the ground floor. Upstairs, the living area is open plan with a spacious modern and well equipped kitchen and dining space which leads to the living area where there are two comfy leather sofas and chair. You can sit here and take full advantage of the amazing countryside views or step out through the patio doors onto the balcony and enjoy sitting at the table with a coffee or a glass of something chilled and breathe in the fresh Welsh air. There’s also an outside seating area right by the barn with barbecue, table and chairs and a great enclosed paddock for exercising dogs right opposite.
The location of the Plucking Barn makes it an ideal base for day trips around west and mid Wales. There are over 60 miles of glorious coastline in Cardigan Bay. There are lots of beaches and coves and many are dog friendly all year round if you are bringing your pet on holiday with you. The pretty coastal resort of New Quay and the colourful Georgian harbour town Aberaeron can be easily reached within 30 minutes’ drive. You’re very likely to see dolphins in the bay and there are boat trips available to watch them and the other wildlife. The Victorian seaside and university town of Aberystwyth is also within easy reach and here you’ll find a traditional pier, promenade and the old electric cliff railway to the summit of Constitution Hill where you can enjoy a really panoramic view of the bay.
If outdoor activities are your thing, there are plenty of options for walkers and cyclists of all abilities as well as horse riding, canoeing and more. Families can enjoy a day out at the National Trust Dolaucothi Gold Mines at Pumsaint, the Silver Mountain Experience (silver-lead mines) at Ponterwyd or the red kite feeding centre at Bwlch Nant Yr Arian. Moonshine Cottage is a delightful lodge situated in its own generous garden and grounds with stunning views over open farmland to the mountains beyond. Just a mile from the charming Black Isle village of Culbokie, it offers peace and seclusion yet within close proximity of good facilities. The main living area is open plan, and this stunning room, with its high vaulted ceiling, is superbly presented. The cathedral-style floor-to-ceiling windows drink in the amazing views and ensure it is light and bright. The furniture and furnishings have been chosen with every consideration to quality and detail.The large fully fitted kitchen is exceptionally well equipped and there is a separate utility room with washing machine and tumble dryer, and sink.
There is both a bathroom with a large 1.6 m bath to sooth aching joints after a ramble and shower room on the ground floor, which have been decorated with a ‘beach hut’ theme and are both unusual and charming.
Stairs lead up from the main room to the mezzanine landing. A wonderful chandelier light hangs from the ceiling and highlights the magnificent views.
There are two beautifully presented bedrooms, both with en suite toilet and wash basin. The double bedroom has a feature carved oak antique bedstead with sumptuously deep high-quality mattress. The twin room is prettily decorated with lovely colour co-ordinated soft furnishings and looks out across the grounds. Beyond lie the fields and hills up towards Glen Affric.
Moonshine cottage has a whole house ventilation system with heat recovery system installed making it ideal for allergy sufferers, this together with an ozone sanitisation system which is used between clients together with an intensive cleaning system helps to ensure the safety of our guests. The gardens consist of preservation woodland and grassed areas as well as shingle with outdoor seating; a wonderful spot in which to sit and admire the changing scenery and watch your four-legged friend run around off lead as the gardens are enclosed. The owners’ house is situated on the adjoining land, where ducks roam.
The village provides good local amenities, including a shop, bar and restaurant. This historic area, thought to have got its name from the dark rich soil of the area, is actually a peninsula. Bounded on three sides by the sea and surrounded by unspoilt countryside, it is a haven for wildlife. Rare birds, deer, seals and otters are regularly spotted. The most famous residents of the area are the bottlenose dolphins that are frequently seen in the surrounding waters. The National Trust property at Cragside is an interesting visitor attraction. The historic market town of Alnwick, where its dramatic castle is the ancestral home to the Duke of Northumberland (and film location for Harry Potter’s Hogwarts Academy) is 14 miles east. The Alnwick Garden is also well worth a visit. The Heritage Coastline, recognised as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is less than 20 miles east making Havannah Cottage an excellent base for exploring the many delights across north Northumberland, and also giving easy access to the Scottish Borders.
