It is light and overlooks the leafy courtyard. The snug at the heart of the property has a large wrap around sofa and invites you to curl up with the family to watch your favourite movie or box set from the Smart TV. There is a utility room with a combined washing machine/tumble dryer and a freezer. Upstairs are three bedrooms offering flexible sleeping arrangements with a spacious, dual aspect, kingsize bedroom, newly refurbished in 2022, with en-suite facilities, at the rear of the property. There is also a double bedroom, and one single bedroom overlooking St Oswald’s Church. A family bathroom, newly refurbished in 2022, with a bath and shower over, completes this floor. Externally is a small, enclosed private courtyard with garden furniture.
The village amenities are all within a short walking distance of the house, with a well-stocked shop, popular cafe and three pubs all providing local ales and hearty meals using locally sourced produce. A further 10-minute walk takes you to the Yorkshire Dales Brewery which has a shop and, in the summer, a beer garden at weekends.
The Yorkshire Dales offer spectacular scenery and an abundance of walks of all ability levels to explore. From the house itself there are beautiful walks along the banks of the nearby River Ure and the Askrigg Waterfalls Walk, which takes in both Whitfield Force and Mill Gill Force. For the more adventurous, longer walks and climbs in Wensleydale and Swaledale are within easy reach. The Yorkshire Three Peaks can be accessed from Horton-in-Ribblesdale, 40-minute drive away. For more restful days, there is so much to see and do within an easy distance. Picturesque Aysgarth Falls and Castle Bolton are nearby, and the market towns of Leyburn and Hawes are a short drive away. The Forbidden Corner in Middleham, a quirky venue with its labyrinth of caves, folly and underground caverns, is 13 miles away, and is hugely popular with families. The historic town of Richmond, famed for its castle, Georgian theatre, riverside walks and abundance of independent shops and tea rooms, is around a 30-minute drive.

Set in the hamlet of Starbotton in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, this Grade II listed, end of terrace cottage dates back to 1663. As such, it has been sympathetically refurbished and makes a quiet retreat from busy everyday life. In winter there is a Dickensian festival, a magical event where the town is transported back in time with shopkeepers, villagers and visitors dressing in Victorian costume. A little further afield lies the bustling market town of Skipton with its Norman castle standing proudly at the head of it wide, sweeping, cobbled high street. Alternatively kick back in the local pub, 200 yards, which serves food and local ales. The nearby village of Kettlewell, approximately 2 miles away boasts three pubs, tea rooms, a village shop and various events during year including The Scarecrow Festival. Turn in either direction out of the Barn at Oak Tree farm and you’ll be spoilt for choice. With walks direct from the doorstep and wall to wall views, this is such a pretty area. Cycling is extremely popular here, being stage to the Tour de France and the annual Tour de Yorkshire.
Travel to Aysgarth to see the waterfalls or visit Hawes and its quirky shops and cafés, not forgetting to stop off at the famous Wensleydale Creamery. In the opposite direction you will pass the picturesque village of Middleham and its famous castle, enjoy the sights as the race horses’ ride to and from the gallops each day, or sit it in the village square and enjoy a coffee as you watch the world go by.
A little further and you will reach the bustling market town of Leyburn with its host of interesting shops, restaurants and cafés, all set around the market square, and of course Friday is market day and a good chance to snap up some of the gorgeous local produce. Shop, pub and restaurant ¼ mile.

Nestled in the small, picturesque village of Hebden, this 19th-century, end-terraced former lead miner’s cottage is surprisingly spacious and enjoys a quiet location in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, with beautiful views from the front patio. Extensively restored, the property retains its original character and charm, with exposed stonework, beams, wooden floors and an inglenook style fireplace.

Carefully furnished throughout, Swallows Nest makes a lovely home from which to either walk or tour the wonderful scenery of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The village of Hebden boasts a fantastic tea room just 550 yards away, and Grassington is just under 2 miles; a charming little town with a wide range of individual country shops, pubs and restaurants. Grassington also plays host to a variety of events including the Summer Music and Arts Festival, which attracts many internationally-known actors, artists and poets every year. Leave the car behind and head to Grassington or the nearby village of Burnsall on foot via the riverside footpaths. You can stop for a bite to eat and a drink in one of the local pubs, before sauntering back along the River Wharfe.

Bolton Abbey, 9 miles, is sure to thrill history buffs and children alike, with its ancient abbey and magical woodland walks. The National Trust property of Studley Royal Park and the unusual rock formations at Brimham Rocks, also a National Trust site, both make for interesting days out, and further afield lie the spa town of Harrogate and York, easily accessed and steeped in history. Spice Mill Cottage is just off the main square of Kirkby Lonsdale, where there is a traditional market held every Thursday. Whether you love modern and lustrous or quirky and old, Kirkby Lonsdale offers something for everyone, with many fine restaurants, traditional pubs, local cafés and boutique shopping. The famous Devil’s Bridge walk starts just a few minutes from the cottage where you can enjoy a lovely walk along the riverside and over to Ruskin’s View or even a dip in the river during summer!
The cottage is set over three floors. On entering the accommodation you are met with an exceptionally designed modern kitchen and a large solid oak dining table. The large patio doors open up onto the courtyard ideal for BBQ’s in the summer months. There is a downstairs toilet and utility room for your comfort. The first floor offers a generous living room with relaxing leather sofas, a large Smart TV and an electric wood burner taking centre stage. A single bedroom is located off the living space. The third floor boasts two well designed bedrooms, with en-suite facilities. Kirkby Lonsdale is centrally located between the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and Lancashire. Just a 15 minute drive from the cottage you will find yourself in Ingleton, North Yorkshire, famous for waterfall’s, caving and climbing. The south Lake District is only a 20 minute drive away and offers attractions such as the South Lakes Safari Zoo, Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway, Lakes Aquarium, Lakeland Motor Museum and Holker Hall Gardens- this is all before you reach Windermere Lake! 25 minutes south on the M6 and you are in the Historic City of Lancaster or by the seaside town of Morecambe. Redmire is a well-serviced village in Wensleydale. Just a few miles from the bustling market town of Leyburn, the area abounds with delightful villages, a fabulous choice of pubs and tea rooms and walks and cycle routes from your doorstep. There is a lovely pub in the village that serves tasty food and offers a warm welcome.

Set in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, this cottage lies at the end of a row, towards the western end of the edge of the well-known village of West Witton, which has a pub serving great food, Carefully furnished and decorated throughout, it offers well-appointed accommodation in an ideal location for walking, touring or cycling. You can return to relax in the rear courtyard, which is fully lit and enjoys comfortable seating, a barbeque, and a wood-burning clay pizza oven.
The bustling market town of Leyburn is just 4 miles, where you will find a selection of individual country shops, pubs, cafés and restaurants, together with the largest auction house in England. Hawes, another market town and home to the famous Wensleydale Creamery is 13 miles away. For those interested in history and architecture, Middleham Castle, Bolton Castle and Jervaulx Abbey are all less than 10 miles away. For family fun, book tickets for the Forbidden Corner (a 4-acre garden with follies, statues and labyrinths), which is a treat for all ages. The popular Polar Express train ride is also close by. There is a farmer’s market that takes place on occasion on the cobbled market square. Why not go fishing at Brompton Lakes, just 2 miles away, home to two coarse fishing lakes, which are also close to the banks of the River Swale. Also perfect for walkers and cyclists, guests will find many woodland walks that pass right through the town and further beyond into the Yorkshire Dales.
Within easy reach are many historic houses and National Trust properties which really are worth a day trip to visit, as well as the wondrous splendours of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, which is within very easy driving distance. Enjoy a day at the races, as Catterick Racecourse is only an 11-minute drive away, or a little further afield, you will be able to enjoy the splendour of the York races too within an hours’ drive. The medieval city of York has its own history and tourist attractions in abundance, from the National Railway Museum to the Jorvik Viking Centre. Beach 28 miles. Adjacent to the village green in the picturesque village of Redmire, with views across to Penhill, this spacious, semi-detached and very well-equipped cottage offers a high level of comfort and gives that home from home feeling. For guests bringing their four-legged friends, the owner has provided a dog bed, bowls, throws, towels and doggie treats.
In the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, this lovely picture perfect village has country walks and some spectacular views over Lower Wensleydale. For outdoor enthusiasts, there are some superb walking and cycling trails available direct from the door, making this a perfect base from which to explore the pretty Dales villages. Try the circular walk from Redmire to Aysgarth taking in both the Redmire Falls and spectacular Aysgarth Falls, Castle Bolton where Mary Queen of Scots was held in the 16th century, Preston-under-Scar, the River Ure and Penhill, passing through the beautiful Dales countryside.
The village pub has now fully reopened after a complete revamp in 2023, and provides, amongst other things, a variety of local beers and delicious breakfasts, snacks and pub grub, and its only 20 yards from the back door. A fish & chip van comes on a Wednesday at 7.30pm - if you like fish & chips these are a must!
Nearby are the market towns of Hawes and Leyburn with their many shops, pubs, restaurants and craft workshops, where craftsmen display their skills and sell handmade products. For groceries, Leyburn is 4 miles away and has convenience stores as well as an award-winning delicatessen and winery. Fresh eggs are available in the village and newspapers can be provided at the nearby farm. All the big supermarkets regularly deliver to the village.
Historical castles and ruins are numerous with Bolton Castle almost on the doorstep, and Middleham Castle a few miles away. From Middleham square you can sit and watch the impressive sight as the race horses pass through on their way to the gallops. The Forbidden Corner is just down the road with its labyrinth of tunnels and underground caves to explore. With so much to do and see, you will certainly want to return.
