The Reading Room Cottages are ideally situated for guests wishing to explore the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. There is a wide range of activities to pursue in the area including walking, cycling, fell running, birdwatching and wildlife spotting. Fishing and shooting are available by private request with the owners- seasonal walked up and driven shooting and stalking for individuals or groups can be arranged.

On site the owners have a fantastic herd of Alpacas and they offer guests the opportunity to participate in alpaca trekking around the land that surrounds the properties. This needs to be booked direct with the owner and paid for in advance. The land that surrounds the lodges is elevated and takes in stunning views which guests can use to relax in. Set on one level, this property is fully open plan. The kitchen includes fridge, electric cooker, hob and sink and there is a dining table within the lodge. There are three single beds and a shower room which includes a shower cubicle, toilet and sink. There is a private sitting area with garden furniture to the front of the property with a barbecue. A breakfast hamper made up of local produce is available on request at £6 per person (minimum order for 2).

Auld Acquaintance Cottage sits in the heart of Ellisland Farm which was built by Robert Burns in 1788 for his young wife and family. Burns, known affectionately as Rabbie, is the national poet of Scotland and is celebrated worldwide for poems and songs including Auld Lang Syne, which was written here. Whilst Ellisland Farm remains much as it was in the 18th century, Auld Acquaintance Cottage was renovated in 2023 into a beautiful holiday retreat in the modern rustic style. With the river right in front and a lovely lake and bluebell wood to the side, it is ideal for those looking to enjoy its surrounding nature and tranquil environment. Throughout May, the ladies in the village provide teas for thirsty travellers who come from far and wide to see the famous bluebells, and here you can also expect to observe plenty of wildlife including ducks and a variety of birds from robins to swifts as you meander along the path through the wood.
