The Roost provides a wonderful tranquil retreat from which to recharge your batteries but is within easy access to the pretty market towns of Helmsley, Pickering, Malton and Thirsk. Sympathetically converted to provide comfortable accommodation, this characterful property features original beams, wood burner and sunroom with stone flagged floor. Elegantly furnished with a Yorkshire feel, this property is homely and inviting ensuring a memorable holiday.
Entry is via the sunroom, the ideal place to relax and enjoy a drink. The underfloor heating ensures this room can be enjoyed throughout the year and your four-legged friend will enjoy lying on the floor getting warm after a long day exploring the North York Moors National Park. The open plan living accommodation can be found on the first floor and is simply stunning. The kingsize bed is nestled to the rear of the room and is situated in front of a large floor-to-ceiling picture window, providing beautiful views across to the river and beyond. The farmhouse-style kitchen and dining area is off to one side and the huge wood burner is surrounded by a Chesterfield sofa.
Outside is a private garden offering both a lawn and patio area, an idyllic spot to sit and relax. Freshly laid eggs from the free-range chickens are available purchase to enjoy a healthy start to your day or pick some of the many herbs in your garden area to help create some delicious home cooked recipes.
This beautiful part of North Yorkshire is a walkers and cyclist’s paradise, with miles of footpaths, cycle routes and bridle ways not to mention the Coast-to-Coast and Cleveland Way paths. On the doorstep is Castle Howard, home to ‘Brideshead Revisited’ and ITV’s ‘Victoria’, Byland and Rievaulx Abbey, Helmsley Castle and the National Bird of Prey Centre. For those wishing for a little more history and culture the historic city of York is only a 40-minute drive away and a little further afield is the North Yorkshire coast and seaside towns of Whitby, Scarborough, and Bridlington. The remaining four lodges retain their near original condition as a visual reminder of their former function. Each refurbished lodge has the added advantage of free parking, an outdoor sitting area and bike parking racks.
Situated just off the Cleveland Way, there are many fine moorland and cliff top walks. There is a golf course and driving range in Brotton, 6¾ miles away, and at Scaling Reservoir, 7¼ miles, there is sailing and fishing. There is a leisure centre 2 miles down the road and a 2-minute stroll down the cobbled street brings you to the centre of the picturesque fishing village with its small harbour nestling beneath rugged cliffs. Step back in time and walk the quaint narrow passages, as Captain James Cook himself must have done. Here in Staithes there are village shops, pubs, cafés and a restaurant, and in 2020 the village was featured on the BBC programme ’Gone Christmas Fishing’ with Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer. Enjoying lovely country views from their verandahs and a tranquil setting, these two lodges make an excellent base for exploring the myriad delights of North Yorkshire. Set with three similar properties on a truly peaceful and friendly little site, they lie 3 miles from the market towns of Kirkbymoorside and Helmsley, which boasts a castle and seasonal open air swimming pool. Rievaulx Abbey, Castle Howard, Flamingo Land, Eden Camp and the North York Moors Steam Railway at Pickering are all within 10 miles whilst the the medieval city of York’s wealth of attractions – including York Minster, the Jorvik Viking Centre, Railway Museum and great shopping – are only 25 miles distant. Scarborough’s sandy beaches, famous theatre and seaside activities are a 40-minute drive away, and fishing, golf and walking are all enjoyed locally. A farm shop/café selling local produce is 0.5 mile and a popular fish and chip shop and restaurant is 0.25 mile.

There are so many places to visit that you will be spoilt for choice, with Rievaulx Abbey, Castle Howard, Flamingo Land, Eden Camp and the North York Moors Steam Railway at Pickering all within 10 miles. The ever popular medieval city of York, with it’s wealth of attractions, including York Minster, the Jorvik Viking Centre, National Railway Museum along with great shopping is only 25 miles away. For a day at the seaside, Scarborough with it’s sandy beaches, famous theatre and seaside activities is reached within a 40-minute drive, while fishing, golf and walking are all enjoyed locally. There is a farm shop/café selling local produce ½ mile away and a popular fish and chip shop and an Indian restaurant are within easy walking distance in the village.

These comfortably converted stable holiday cottages are situated in the picturesque village of Ebberston on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors and only 7 miles from the pretty market town of Pickering with its steam railway, Norman castle and church. Renovated to a good standard, these tastefully furnished and decorated self catering cottages provide an ideal base for visiting the seaside towns of Scarborough, Filey and Whitby. Dalby Forest is close by with its beautiful walks, adventure play areas and picnic sites. The historic city of York with its medieval minster is 45 minutes’ drive. Tucked away in the peaceful village of Felixkirk, this cosy, dog-friendly holiday cottage adjoins the owner’s home and provides a very comfortable rural retreat on the very edge of the North York Moors National Park, near Thirsk. This brick-built, single-storey cottage is a hidden gem offering a very private stay whilst enjoying an enviable position near to the award-winning, dog-friendly pub and is 5 minutes by car from the nearby market town of Thirsk. It has been completely renovated internally in December 2019 and externally over the summer of 2020.
The cottage offers beautifully presented accommodation for two guests and their pets. There is a small double bedroom with under-bed storage. There is extensive garden space outside the cottage with stunning views, which is also fully fenced to allow your pets to wander in a contained area. Access to a larger field is also provided. Car parking for two cars is available next to the cottage, which is at the end of a private tarmac and gravelled driveway. There is also separate secure storage available for bicycles.
The owners are keen walkers, runners and cyclists and can advise of lovely local and regional routes and provide local dog-friendly walk guides for your use. From the doorstep, there are numerous footpaths and cycling trails and the renowned, traditional, dog-friendly village inn serves local produce just minutes from the cottage. The village is home to a 4x4 driving centre which offers action-packed days with off-road driver training and quad biking, and at Sutton Bank, visitors can take a trial lesson at the Yorkshire Gliding Club and visit the nearby famous White Horse near Kilburn. Thirsk, 3 miles away, is a quaint market town famous for its connections with James Herriot, the well-known vet and author of ‘All Creatures Great and Small’. Thirsk is also home to a well-known racecourse and 15th century church.
Days out can be enjoyed at Rievaulx Abbey near the wonderful town of Helmsley, as well as Castle Howard and Fountains Abbey. Board the steam train at Pickering to be transported through the stunning North York Moors to the coastal port of Whitby and explore the fishing villages at Robin Hood’s Bay and Staithes. The North Yorkshire Moors and also the Yorkshire Dales are easily accessible by car and the historic walled city of York is only 25 miles away, with its iconic minster, exquisite architecture, museums and art galleries, and is not to be missed when visiting Yorkshire. The semi-detached cottage has had a newly fitted kitchen in 2022 and sits within the grounds of the owner’s home just a short walk from one of the smallest pubs in the UK, known for its traditional ales and warm friendly welcome. Beck Hole is located deep in the valley with the holiday cottage overlooking the village just a short stroll from the local pub. Stunning valleys and sweeping hillside views can be enjoyed from the idyllic location of the cottage. You could almost be anywhere in the world, close your eyes and listen to the silence interrupted only by bird song. Cycle tracks, bridle paths and walkways abound from the doorstep with quaint little villages popping up when you least expect it.
It is just 1 mile from the well-known village of Goathland best known for its connections with Heartbeat, indeed Hill Farm in which The Dairy sits was used for many of the film shoots. The village green is lined with quaint curio shops, inns and tea rooms serving some of Yorkshire’s finest cuisine. You can board the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Train here and take a memorable journey through the glorious Esk Valley as it steams its way across the valleys into the historic market town of Pickering. The ancient sea port of Whitby is just a short drive over the moors, eight miles, a colourful harbour leads to the three mile stretch of sandy beach overlooked and almost protected by the ancient abbey ruins and St Mary’s church. The brave (and fit) can take the 199 steps up to the abbey ruins where panoramic views over Whitby across to Sandsend can be enjoyed. Explore the smugglers coves of Robin Hoods Bay, Runswick Bay and Staithes or visit the more elegant seaside resort of Scarborough, Britain’s first ever seaside resort.
