Shewte Farm is an elegant, Grade II listed, galleried stone barn and has a floor-to-ceiling picture window offering spectacular views over Dartmoor. Sleeping six comfortably in three spacious bedrooms, it has an open plan living space with French limestone floor, underfloor heating and a wood burner. It has been furnished throughout with characterful antiques and the highest quality linen. Guests also have use of the adjoining games barn and the tree house.
The location is idyllic and ever so peaceful, set in the middle of 80 acres of fields, woods and streams set between the National Park and National Trust land. The area is exceptionally rich in wildlife including buzzards, deer, otters (part of National England Otter Survey) and sky larks, as well as England’s largest collection of bog myrtle. The location is perfect for walking or cycling on Dartmoor, visiting numerous beaches or National Trust properties. Despite this rural setting not far from Bovey Tracey, which include an excellent delicatessen, butcher, baker and restaurants. Beach 10 miles. Shops and restaurants 1½ miles.

Tucked away in the heart of the mid-Devon countryside lies Hazelnut Lodge. With views over surrounding fields to the countryside beyond, this is the perfect place to get away from it all and enjoy the peace and quiet. Located in the grounds of the owner’s smallholding, there is a private drive leading down to the property. Skirted by the private woods, there is a large garden and sitting-out area. The spacious open plan living space is complimented by an inviting bedroom with its super kingsize bed. Patio doors lead from the living area onto the patio giving further access to a decking area for dining al fresco. Hazelnut Lodge is a comfortable base from which to explore all that Devon has to offer. Exeter is easily reached, and has a wide variety of shops, restaurants and, of course, its historic cathedral. Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks are accessible and provide walking for all abilities and stunning scenery. There are a number of National Trust properties in the area, most notably Castle Drogo and Arlington Court. Also within easy reach (20 miles) is Powderham Castle. This remarkable 14th century castle, set in a beautiful deer park on the banks of the River Exe, has been home to the same family since 1391. Visitors are encouraged to explore the picturesque gardens, discover the interior beauty of the castle and to take part in some of the events which are held throughout the year. The wonderful RHS gardens at Rosemoor and the Dartington Crystal Factory are worth a visit and both these attractions are based at Great Torrington. There is golf, fishing and horse riding available in the local area and cycle hire can be arranged on the Tarka Trail at various locations. Shop 3 miles, pub 1¼ miles and restaurant 5 miles.

Situated within the Dartmoor National Park, set back from a beautiful, leafy stretch of the B3212 and a mile from Doccombe, these three, lodge-style properties (refs W43911, 28924), accessed via a track, are adjacent to the owners’ home. The holiday lodges lie in a lovely setting that offer a comfortable base from which to explore the surrounding area. There are 10 acres of beautiful, ancient woodland, complete with a stream winding its way through the land, plus an abundance of wildlife, ponds and granite boulders. A rich variety of plants and woodland flowers offer an idyllic haven for the resident wildlife. This is a brilliant area for walking, relaxing and star gazing as there is no light pollution. Nearby, a golf club and horse riding over Dartmoor are available. Being in the midst of Dartmoor, there are many superb walks, reservoirs, heather-clad tors and Dartmoor ponies. There are many places of interest for the whole family. If you are a keen walker, the Teign Valley is well known for its delightful woodland footpaths. It is an area of outstanding beauty and in the springtime, the Dunsford woods are famous for beautiful natural daffodils and a little later, a carpet of bluebells. Splash Cottage is a two-bedroom granite-built cottage set within Dartmoor National Park in the hamlet of Ponsworthy, near the village of Widecombe-in-the-Moor. Peacefully set at the end of a row of picturesque, thatched cottages with a quaint ford running across the road, this holiday home has plenty of charm and character and offers a unique escape with spectacular surroundings.
The most famed beauty spot and well-loved ancient tor, Haytor Rock, is just a 13-minute drive away. Whether on foot or on bike, there are endless routes straight from the doorstep and the more adventurous may wish to tackle the rugged and dramatic Dartmoor Tors. As you head into the cottage you will enter into cosy living and dining area which showcases beautiful beamed ceilings, comfortable seating, a Smart TV with freesat and Sky and a wood burner (the first bundle of logs and kindling are provided). Gather your friends and family around the dining table for a celebratory meal. The well equipped kitchen has everything needed for your home cooking, including an electric oven, electric hob, fridge/freezer, dishwasher and a microwave. This then leads through to the utility area which has a washing machine, tumble dryer and the only bathroom in the property with a shower over the bath, toilet and sink.
Sit outside and enjoy the sun in the garden with its outdoor seating and garden furniture. This is the perfect spot to plan your adventurous day ahead over a morning coffee. There are two comfortable bedrooms on the first floor, one with a standard double bed and the other with a zip and link king-size bed which can be set-up with 2ft 6in twin beds if requested.
The cottage is based directly adjacent to the Two Moors Way footpath, popular with walkers and offers a 116-mile coast-to-coast trail linking Wembury in South Devon to Lynmouth in North Devon. Steeped in folklore, Widecombe-in-the-Moor is just 2.3 miles away and is widely known as Dartmoor’s most famous village with the spectacular moorland and tors rising up on all sides, making it a perfect location for walkers, mountain bikers, riders, bird watchers or those that love dramatic landscapes. The village is made up of a mixture of granite-built houses and a lovely old church known as the ‘cathedral of the moor’. There are a couple of good food pubs, a café for cream teas and gift shops. A 15-minute drive brings you to the charming town of Ashburton, with its independent shops, antique shops and cafés.
The Southwest coastal path and the local beaches of Teignmouth, Shaldon and Dawlish are around a 40-minute drive away. Day trips to the beaches in the South Hams such as Blackpool Sands and Goodrington Beach also offer a great alternative for a fun day-out and they are within an hour’s drive. Bovey Castle is 15 minutes’ drive away, Gidleigh Park is 25 minutes, 45 minutes from the cathedral city of Exeter and 30 minutes to Tavistock. You can settle down at a pub, or find an idyllic spot to enjoy a picnic whilst taking in the spectacular scenery. Meldon Reservoir is just 8 miles away and offers fishing, water sports and lovely lakeside walks. The pretty towns of Okehampton and Tavistock are close by, and there are also many beautiful gardens including RHS Rosemoor and The Lost Gardens of Heligan within easy reach. Devon and Cornwall offer fantastic coastal walking and boast sandy beaches and hidden coves, ideal for surfing or exploring the many rock pools. Fishing, tennis, horse riding, pony trekking and an 18-hole golf course are all close by. The Tarka Trail is one of the country’s longest, traffic-free, walking and cycling paths, and forms part of the Devon Coast to Coast cycle route. Beach 27 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 350 yards.

With views of the sea as you approach this holiday property, Honeysuckle Bay Cottage is one half of a 17th-century former public house, which has been tastefully decorated and furnished offering spacious accommodation. This semi-detached house has views across Torbay from upstairs, with a balcony in the main bedroom. Close by are Napoleonic forts, which are now part of the Berry Head Nature Reserve, and can be visited at any time. Shoalstone Pool, an outdoor saltwater pool, is an Art Deco icon of the South Devon coastline, and is just ¼ mile away.

Visit Greenway House and Gardens, Agatha Christie’s stately home, or Dartmoor, with its tors and quaint villages. Enjoy a boat trip to maritime Dartmouth, where you can ride on the steam railway, or take a leisurely cruise along the River Dart. North Devon has plenty to see and do, and is home to some of the best beaches in the country including Woolacombe and Saunton. The nearest beach is at Instow and is ideal for children or just a great place to walk off life’s stresses, and then enjoy a meal or drink at one of the pubs and restaurants along the front. The town of Great Torrington is only a short drive away and has most amenities you may require. The larger regional town of Barnstaple has a busy high street, the Pannier Market and famous Butchers Row. There are numerous places of interest close by including the RHS gardens at Rosemoor, Dartington Crystal and the historic fishing village at Clovelly. For the younger ones a visit to the Big Sheep or Milky Way Adventure Parks is a good option. There is walking on Dartmoor or hire a bike and cycle the Tarka Trail, and there is also golf and fishing available locally.
